What a huge treat it was for us today to welcome the poet Steve Sobolewski to share the Friday of Book Week with us! He spent the day with our Year 1 and 2 children, inspiring them to write poems based on animals. Steve got the children to imagine an ‘Animal Olympics’ and which animal would be the best fit for different events.
Each child then had to think of an animal and write a poem about that creature. Year 1 dazzled with their incredible illustrations to accompany their poems and Steve was impressed at the range of imagined animals – we had cheetahs, jellyfish, lizards, a Komodo Dragon, rabbits, dogs and cars amongst others! Year 2 produced some truly jaw-dropping poetry of amazing quality.
The children in the Reception classes were treated to Steve reading them some poems and then he was our audience for Reception performing the poems that they had learned off by heart this week.
A huge thank you to Steve for inspiring our budding poets here at Cypress with your fantastic workshops. All the children really enjoyed spending the end of Book Week 2026 with you!
Have a wonderful weekend!
