CYP LOWER: Pumpkins and dots in Little Cypress

Despite it being a four day week, it has been fun-packed and busy, busy, busy! These a few of the things we have been doing in Little Cypress:

Halloween

We have been thinking about the colours purple, black, white and orange for Halloween. We have enjoyed playing with sensory mixes of dyed chick peas, rice and beans. This tested our pouring and scooping skills, making sure we kept the mixture in the tuff tray, as much as possible. It was fun picking out the mini pumpkins, skulls, ghosts and bones and then mixing them all up again, making potions.

Diwali Celebrations

The Hindu festival of Diwali is fast approaching and we have been beginning to learn about the story of Rama and Sita and how the ten headed demon Ravana was defeated. Rama and Sita returned from their exile in the forest and the clay diyas (lights) lit their way home. The children were fascinated by this story and used such mature words such as ‘defeated’ when discussing it afterwards.

Yayoi Kusama Dotty Pumpkins

Pumpkins and squashes have featured heavily this week in Little Cypress. We have loved pushing pins into the fruit and adding elastic bands to make all sorts of shapes. We also looked in to the work of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama who loved dots and created incredible pumpkin paintings. We looked at her work and then looked closely at some odd shaped and patterned pumpkins and created our own pumpkin art using pastels and coloured sticky dots. The focus we showed was very impressive!

Bread Rolls

After reading the ‘Little Red Hen’ as part of our Harvest and Autumn theme, we made our own wholemeal bread rolls. Unlike the Little Red Hen, we all helped to mix and knead the dough, then waited patiently whilst it proved. Of course, we were all happy to eat them once they were ready!

We have had a wonderful first half term with our Rainbows and Nursery children and we hope you all have a fantastic half term break!
