CYP weekly news update

We hope everyone has had a great week and we’re looking forward to seeing children and families at the PTFA Summer Celebration tomorrow (Saturday 8th July, 2-7pm).  Please see the flyer below for more information.

At the Lower School this week, we enjoyed a virtual library this week from Croydon Libraries who told us all about their Summer reading challenge.  We LOVE books at Cypress and it’d be great to see children participating in this FREE initiative over the holidays.  Get down to Thornton Heath or Upper Norwood library to get started!  Mrs Dutton led an assembly on Tuesday celebrating American Independence Day.

At the Upper School we have been learning about the power of imitation.  We looked at an example of a father teaching his son how to roll clay and discussed what the boy was doing to imitate and learn from what he was doing.  In our BLP sessions, we have been thinking about how we use imitation in different aspects of our learning and different role models we might look to support us.

Year 2 visit Morden Hall Park

Ruby, Violet and Turquoise class travelled by bus and tram to Morden Hall Park this week where they had the chance to search for minibeast and engage in pond dipping!  A great time was had by all and children thoroughly enjoyed their picnic lunch too.  We are very proud of everyone’s behaviour and excellent manners whilst off-site.  We will post a separate story with photos next week!

Year 3 visit the Buddhapadipa temple

Holly, Cedar and Birch class visited the Buddhist temple in Wimbledon yesterday.  They travelled by train and bus and had a wonderful time enhancing their RE learning.  They enjoyed meeting a Buddhist monk and learning more about the religion.  We have received some wonderful compliments about the children’s excellent attitude and behaviour during the trip.  Well done Year 3 we are so proud of you!

Year 2 lunch at the Upper School

On Monday, Year 2 visited the Upper School for lunch and playtime as part of their transition activities.  They enjoyed their lunch in the hall and then joined Year 3 for play.  The children had a wonderful time playing with their friends and some even chose to go into the library and share a book in.  All the staff were very impressed with the children’s behaviour.  We will be welcoming the children back to the Upper site for ‘Rainbow’ assembly and play time on Monday.

Cedar Class Assembly

We started the day at the Upper School today with a wonderful assembly from Cedar class who shared their learning from their science topic ‘Light’.  The children really impressed with their scientific knowledge and confidence.  It was also great to see some many examples of high quality work from the children’s science books. We ended the assembly with a fantastic performance of ‘Firework’ in honour of how brightly the children have shone during their time in Year 3.  Well done Cedar Class on a wonderful performance and a huge thank you to Miss Hassan for all your hard work and organistion with the children.

Word of the Week

At the Upper School, this week’sWord Wizard was Sophronya in Lime Class who wrote an excellent sentence using the word ‘sneer‘.  This week’s word is ‘polluted‘.  Please post your entry in the box outside the office to be in with a chance.

Cypress Superstars

Well done to Imogen and Kaden in Reception this week for their fantastic writing, inspired by their trip to Crystal Palace Farm.  It’s such a joy to see so many children at the end their Reception year who are now able to write full sentences using their phonic knowledge.  Rayner in Reception has been working hard on her doubles in maths – great work!  Alan and Alanna in Violet class have independently written some great sentences inspired by their work on ‘The Secret of Black Rock’ by Joe Todd-Stanton.  Rowan, Bertie, Elliot, Bon, Mabli and Oliver in Year 1 have also produced some impressive writing this week based on the Awongelema story about a magic tree.  Well done to Kane and Aleksy for telling the time using an analogue clock and even completing some challenges!  Finally, Oskar in Year 2 has amazingly written two whole pages independently, using his phonic sounds!  He has re-told the story of ‘Black Rock’ using lots of adjectives and we are so proud of him.

At the Upper School, congratulations to Joe, Kitty and Cora- Rose in Lime Class who came to visit the office with some wonderful designs for houses based on their study of architecture during their Enrichment session.  The children will now be turning these designs in to models during their session next week.  We are looking forward to seeing how their plans turn out.

Djembe Flames and Cypress Choir perform at Crystal Palace Festival

On Wednesday evening, the Djembe Flames and Cypress Choir had the opportunity to perform on the main stage at Crystal Palace Festival.  The children gave a fantastic perfromance and loved being on stage.  A huge thank you to Mr Spoerer for providing this opportunity for the children and also to all our parents and carers who supported the children.
