CYP – We are safe, healthy and happy

We have had another busy week at Cypress, with different trips and events taking place.

This week is National Tree Week and on Monday at the Lower School, we began the week with an assembly from Miss Balhadere about the importance of trees and the different types of trees we see around us.  What an interesting way to start the week! This week at the Upper School, we have been thinking about the importance of noticing when someone needs help and taking action rather than being indifferent. We watched a short visual story about Mr Indifferent, who learned that taking the time to recognise how others are feeling, putting yourself in their shoes and acting with kindness can help create a caring community (and also makes you feel good inside!). We also reflected on times when someone has shown us empathy when we needed help. We know that empathy is the key to a happy school community. Moving forward, we will try to pause before we react, think carefully, notice when help is needed, and take positive action!

Lime Class Assembly

This morning we were treated to an assembly from Lime Class. They gave a us a whistlestop tour of their journey so far this term and delivered empassioned speeches as Boudiccs, the fearsome warrior-queen and also the Matthew Henson – an arctic explorer – who remained largely unappreciated for his contrubitions to exploration due to his ethinicity. They finished the assembly with ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ by Justin Timberlake – an expression of how they’re feeling about their first term in Year 4! Well done, Lime and special thanks to Ms Stewart, Miss Barker and Ms Isaacs for supporting the children

Road Safety Week

Last week was Road Safety Week at the Lower School.  We started the week with an assembly from Miss Hunt about this year’s theme ‘Safe Vehicles Save Lives’. The children also took part in different activities in class which included designing a driverless car and making sure it was safe.  Thank you to Mrs Jerman for organising this. At the Upper School,we have been busy learning about road safety. Ms Dodd and Ms Chira also ran a poster competition to raise awareness of how to stay safe when travelling around our local area. Watch this space fo rthe names of our poster competition winners!

Year 5 Junior Roadwatch Initiative

On Wednesday, Year 5 took part in the Junior Roadwatch initiative led by the Metropolitan Police in partnership with Croydon Council. The children enjoyed a carousel of engaging activities, including learning about policing in the community and the role of a police officer. A particular highlight was getting the chance to sit inside a police van and of course, press all the buttons! Most importantly, in small groups, the pupils assisted the police in educating speeding drivers, helping them understand the impact of their actions on community safety. The children learned a great deal from this real-life experience and it’s fair to say the drivers they spoke to did as well. It was a valuable and memorable day for everyone involved. Year 5 Viking Day

On Thursday, Year 5 stepped back in time for their Viking Day, arriving at school dressed as fearsome warriors: helmets, cloaks, shields and all! The children looked fantastic and were buzzing with excitement from the moment they walked in. Throughout the day, they took part in an energetic and immersive workshop led by two ‘real’ Vikings who had been shipwrecked and needed the children’s help to complete their saga. The pupils were swept up in a lively adventure, acting out scenes that helped them explore different aspects of Viking life, including shipbuilding, myths, long voyages, law-making and even Viking burials. By the end of the day, the big question was whether they would stay on their peaceful island or choose to “go a-Viking”! I am sure you can guess the answer! It was a memorable, fact-filled experience that brought their history learning to life. Thank you to the Year 5 team for organising this event.

Year 2 Visit Hampton Court Palace

As part of their learning about the Tudors, Year 2 have visited Hampton Court Palace this week.  They enjoyed visiting the Tudor kitchens.  Whilst walking around the palace, they saw portraits of Henry’s wives, walked through his banqueting hall and got to see his crown.  The children are now looking forward to applying this knowledge into their learning at school.  Thank you to all the parents and carers who gave up their time to support on the trip.  To see more about the trip, please read our article here

We wish our children and families a relaxing weekend.
