CYP – Learning about the wider world

At the Lower School, we started the week with an assembly introducing the concept of Humanism which forms part of the new R.E. curriculum. We were visited by Trevor Moore from Understanding Humanism.  He explained that Humanism is not a religion but a belief.  Humanists believe that we have one life and we should make it as full and happy as we can for ourselves and others.  This includes a responsibility for the planet and other creatures too.  We learnt that Humanists ask questions, are kind and find happiness.  This means showing empathy.  Humanists look at science, reason and experience to find evidence and decide what they believe is true.  They believe in treating others how you would like them to treat you.  Thank you Trevor for such an interesting introduction to Humanism.

At the Upper School our week has been dominated by the Standardised Assessment Tests in Year 6. Our children showed great resilience during a long week of testing. The rest of the Upper school also were patient and supportive, ensuring corridors were silent and enduring longer mornings on days where there were longer testing durations or two tests for Year 6 to sit. Well done to all our children this week.

Harrisons Workshops with School Council and Eco-Council

On Tuesday, we had two workshops from Harrisons Catering.  The Eco-Council spent the afternoon learning about herbs and finding out how food is grown.  They then designed and made their own salads.  Harrisons are also donating a rocket garden to the school so that the children can grow their own vegetables and herbs to be used in our kitchen.  To see what the School Council got up to in their workshop, read our article here

Harrisons will be working with the Upper School on 11th June, with our Eco and School Councils enjoying salad workshops. We will keep you updated!

Farewell, Miss Brooks!

We will soon be saying a fond farewell to Miss Brooks, who will be leaving us at the end of this half term to take up an exciting new role in the United States, fulfilling a long-held dream of working abroad. Miss Brooks has been a valued part of Cypress Primary, especially within Year 4 Rowan Class, where her calm, caring nature and dedication have made a real difference. She has also supported children across year groups through targeted interventions, helping many to grow in confidence and ability. While she will be greatly missed by pupils and staff alike, we are delighted that Miss Collins, a skilled, personable and dedicated TA, will be continuing the fantastic support in Year 4 after the half term. She will be a wonderful addition to our Cypress teaching support team.

We thank Miss Brooks for her hard work and commitment, and we wish her every success and happiness in this exciting new chapter.

Cypress Superstars

Well done to Zaniyah, Albi, Arthur, Casey and Leena in Ruby Class who came to share their wonderful home learning about the seaside.  We were treated to a model lighthouse, swimsuit designs, seaside paintings and some very interesting sea life facts. Congratulations to Sufyan in Blue Class who came to share his fantastic phonics work.  He has made amazing progress this term. Leon in Orange Class came to share his amazing writing.  He had written a fantastic retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk independently!   Well done to Amelia and Camille in Indigo Class who came to share their amazing rainmakers they had made as part of their home learning.  It was lovely to see such creative work.

A huge Cypress shout-out to Mabli in Holly Class for her outstanding model of Stonehenge. She sculpted the iconic stone formation from clay and finished it with a sleek coat of silver paint, giving it a strikingly realistic look. Mabli also crafted a base that beautifully captures the lush green landscape surrounding the monument. A brilliant blend of creativity and craftsmanship. Well done, Mabli! Hazel, Loresa, Emilia, and Omari in Sycamore Class have been hard at work designing eye-catching leaflets for social clubs they’d love to launch—as part of their PSHE Values sessions on Tuesdays. From the looks of it, their interests are as diverse as they are exciting! Each club sounded like something we’d all want to sign up for… Can I join too?

We wish all our children and families a lovely weekend.
