Reception have been loving their Spring half term topic of “To the rescue.” We have been fortunate to have had some incredible visitors over the past few weeks to enrich our topic. We have learnt all about people in the real world who regularly come to the rescue and had opportunities to ask each of them questions about their jobs and their lives.
Our topic was kick started with a visit from Jon, who is a police dog handler, and his dog Rumour. He gave an assembly to the whole school and then spent time in each of the Reception classes. Rumour, his German Shepherd dog was incredibly well trained and well behaved. We heard how Rumour barks on command and when he has found a missing person. It was SO loud!
Then Dr Deeksha, a hospital paediatrician, who also happens to be Remi’s Mum, popped in to teach us all about how she looks after babies when they are in hospital. We shared our experiences of looking after babies and being in hospital. There were some very interesting questions about how and why Dr Deeksha can’t deliver her own baby when it is due!
Also, last week we were thrilled by “Green watch” bringing in their fire engine. We were lucky enough to see their power tools and sit inside the cab of the fire engine itself. It was thrilling! We asked one of the fire fighters why they wanted to join the Fire Brigade and found out she had been inspired when a fire engine visited her school when she was little. Lets hope history repeats itself and we inspire the next generation.
This week we have had a visit from another policeman, PC Nawol. He explained all about his very important role within the police force and he was impressed with the quality of questions the children asked him. The children were equally impressed to learn that PC Nawol had attended Cypress Primary as a child!
We will round off our topic at the end of the week with a visit from Dr Singh, who is a dentist, as well as being Lyra’s Mum. We will be learning all about the importance of keeping our teeth clean and healthy.
So watch this space, we may find that lots of the children have decided on their career path already!
