CYP – Year 6 Visit the Natural History Museum

On Monday, our Year 6 children had an exciting trip to the Natural History Museum in London.

We took part in an amazing Evolution Workshop, where the children became real scientists. They worked together to use evidence and clues to match models of horses’ legs to the correct time periods — discovering how animals have changed and adapted over millions of years.

The children also investigated how the size of a lizard’s toe pad can affect its survival, learning how characteristics are inherited and how this links to the Darwin’s idea of “survival of the fittest.” Everyone loved getting hands-on and thinking like evolutionary scientists!

After the workshop, we explored the museum’s fascinating Darwin Centre, where we saw real specimens and learnt more about how scientists study living things. The human evolution gallery deepened our understanding about the evolution of our species. We were amazed by the colossal size of Mary Anning’s Plesiosaurus fossil discovery as she has been our scientist focus for the half term. What an incredible palaeontologist and fossil collector she was! We also couldn’t miss the Dinosaur, Creepy Crawlies and Volcano exhibitions, which were definite highlights of the day.

It was a fantastic day of learning, discovery, and adventure — even the rainy weather couldn’t dampen our spirits! This has been a great way to end Autumn 1 for year 6. They have been working really hard and I am excited to see what the rest of the year brings for them!

Thank you to the Year 6 Team and all the parent volunteers who supported on this trip.

Have a great half term everyone!
