This week, Year 3 had the amazing experience to travel back to time to the Stone age! We thought we were going to Whitehorse Manor junior School, but we were in fact transported by the 468 bus to the Stone Age! We entered a huge yurt tent that was covered in beautiful, hand-drawn cave paintings. In the centre of the yurt, was a fire that was then used later on in the day to cook fish! We were introduced to Memma and Twig, two cavepeople who led our caveman extravaganza day!
Memma and Twig went through the Stone Age timeline, explaining the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic times to us. They demonstrated how to cavepeople would make fire and with the use of flint, a mushroom and chanting of ‘Fire Brother Comer’ to create a useful fire to cook food on and to keep warm. They also taught us how early settlers lived; how people hunted and prepared food, making clothing and how they used tools.
Twig showed us how maceral fish was prepared and cooked on a fire. They explained how Stone Age people would use the whole animal; respect for life, would not wasting anything, use every bit where possible. As the fish cooked, we were then very lucky to have a go at lots of activities and tasks cavepeople would have to take part in during prehistory! We had lots of hands-on activities including; flint tool knapping, shaping bone with flint tools, trying on different clothing, playing Stone Age instruments and handling tools.
What an inspiring Thematic lesson we had!
Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped out!
