CYP Lower – A Book Week Extravaganza

We have had the most amazing Book Week at Cypress Lower with the children, staff and parents all involved.

Lou Kuenzler

We began our Book Week a day early at the Lower School as we were lucky enough to have a visit from Lou Kuenzler the author of ‘The Robber Racoon’ and ‘Calm Down Zebra’ to name a few.  She began the day with a whole school assembly which had us all completey enthralled.  Lou than worked with our Reception and Year One classes and even ate lunch with the children.  They were very excited to have an author join them at their table.

Coral Rumble

On Monday, we were visited by the poet Coral Rumble. She shared some poems in assembly from her book ‘ Things that shoud be in a poem’ and a very emotive poem ‘Mustafa’s jumper.  This was a wonderful way to start our day.  Coral then worked with our Year 1 classes and they all loved working with her.  I have seen some wonderful poems based on ‘The Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat’ which I have really enjoyed reading.  I can really see how inspired the children were by their sessions with Coral.

Margaret Bateson- Hill

On Tuesday morning, we were joined by Margaret Bateson- Hill who captivated the children during her whole school assembly.  Margaret then worked with Year 2 using her book ‘Lao Lao of Dragon Mountain’.    Year 2 had a great time in their workshops designing their own dragons.  They have then used these to write their own versions of Lao Lao’s story.

Grace Francis

On Tuesday we are also joined by illustrator and storyteller Grace Francis who had a fabulous time working with the children in Nursery and Reception.  To see more about this read the Little Cypress article here

Buddy and Parent Reading

This week we have been lucky to be joined by many parents for our reading sessions in Reception and Year 1.  The children have also taken part in ‘buddy reading’ sessions with children from the Upper School and have loved reading with the older children.  Thank you to all the parents and carers who were able to join us for these sessions.  It was lovely to welcome you to Cypress.

World Book Day

Yesterday, we marked World Book Day by coming to school in our pyjamas and comfy clothes for reading or by dressing as our favourite book character.  We were also joined by Mrs Sorensen and Lily who had both dressed up for the occasion.  The day started with our World Book Day assembly and fashion show.  Watch the video below to see our wonderful costumes.

Extreme Reading

Well done to all the children who entered our extreme reading competition.  Congratulations to our winners: Ersel in Orange Class, Rosie in Blue Class and Eve in Turquoise Class.  You can see there photos below.

Book Fair

Please remember to come and join us for the Book Fair on the Upper Site.  We are open Monday and Tuesday before and after school and Wednesday before school.  Children can use their £1 Book Token to get a pound off any book £2.99 and over.  We look forward to seeing you there.

A Huge Thank You

We would like to thank the Cypress PTFA for your continued funding of these valuable author visits.  Also, thank you to Mrs Parker for all your hard work booking the authors and Miss Cheeseman for all your organisation this week.

The children and staff at Cypress would also like to say thank you to all our visiting authors this week.  You have had such a big impact on all the children.

We wish all our children a wonderful weekend.
