CYP – Remembering Others

This week has been a very busy week at Cypress with lots of different events taking place.

Remembrance Day

Mrs Carpenter spoke in assembly on Monday about conflict and how we can resolve disagreements on the playground. We identified listening, empathy, good communication skills and a calm approach among other important qualities that help to create peace. She reminded us that as the peacemakers of tomorrow it is important to develop these skills now and use them today to help foster a better world for the future. She also said that when we think about those who have fallen on Tuesday, we must remember the hope of a better world and our role in creating a more peaceful society. She reminded us that we must never repeat the mistakes of history which led to bloodshed and sacrifice.

At the Upper School on Tuesday, the House Captains led a remembrance assembly where they explored how different cultures remember the fallen soldiers of conflict, both in the world wars and in conflicts around the world. They spoke confidently, delievring a sensitive and poignant message about sacrifice, the importance of taking time to reflect on Armistice Day and the significance of the poppy. We would like to thank the House Captains and Ms Fernandes for a wonderful assembly and also Ms Prideaux for organising the resources for our class wreaths, which we laid during our gathering in memory of the fallen. On Tuesday at the Lower School, we marked Remembrance Day with a special assembly from Turquoise Class who produced a very poignant and moving assembly.  We were lucky to be joined by many parents and carers who were so supportive.  To see more about this assembly, please see our news article here. At 11 a.m. we also held a two minutes silence to remember all those who sacrificed their life for peace for others.

Year 1 Moon Day

On Wednesday, it was a very exciting day for Year 1 as they blasted off into space for their immersive moon experience.  The children enjoyed a picnic on the moon, interviewed an alien and enjoyed a range of sensory activities to help them describe different materials.  To find out more about this click here.

Friendship Week

This week is Friendship Week at the Lower School. We began the week with an assembly from Mrs Jerman.  The children have been completing different activities in their classes to create understanding about how they can be a good friend and show kindness and empathy towards others.  We have all been demonstrating our Pegasus value ‘We Care’.

Next week is Friendship Week at the Upper School. Watch out for details of what we’ve been up to next week!

Indigo and Green Class visit the Science Museum

Today Indigo and Green Class have visited the Science Museum to further enhance their learning about the moon.  The children learnt about what is like to be an astronaut, travel to space and live on the space station.  Thank you to all our parents and carers who supported on the trip and to our Year 1 team for planning and organising such a fantastic trip. The children are now looking forward to applying their new learning in school.

Children In Need

Today we have been raising money for Children In Need by coming to school in our brightest colours and making a donation to this charity.  The theme this year is ‘Challenge 25’ and we have all been learning a 25 step dance routine from Strictly Come Dancing.  This morning all the children took part in a flash mob showing off the dance moves they had learnt.  Thank you to everyone who made a donation. Thank you to Ms Prideaux for organising this! It was such great fun and a great way to challenge ourselves as part of ‘Challenge 25’. Watch out for details of the total donated across the Upper and Lower.

Remembering Ms Ashton

It was with great sadness that we began the week by writing to inform you that over the weekend, Ms Roberta (Bobbie) Ashton, a much loved member of staff, had died.  She had become increasingly unwell over the last few months and died peacefully, with her family at her side.

Ms Ashton worked at Cypress Primary School for 24 years, mainly at the Lower School.  Her son Dan also attended the school.  Ms Ashton started at Cypress as a Lunchtime Supervisor and over her many years of dedicated service has been a Teaching Assistant and has also worked across our Breakfast and After School Clubs.  The staff, children and Cypress community will all remember Ms Ashton for her sense of humour and fondness towards the children.

If you would like to share your memories of Ms Ashton, there is a Book of Remembrance in the Lower School office for you to sign. This will then be passed on her family.

We wish all our children and families a restful weekend.
