ATW Reception news – Funnybones and Diwali

This week in Reception, the children have been busy finishing their first topic, ‘Marvellous Me!’. The book this week was ‘Funny Bones’ by Janet and Allen Ahlberg. The class had a spooky visitor called Professor Bones (the school skeleton) who taught them all about the human skeleton. The children enjoyed feeling their bones and learning the different names of those body parts, such as the ‘skull’ and ‘thigh’. The children had a go at putting a skeleton back together again, just like in the story.

On Monday it was Diwali.  Reception had a very special visit from Aarvik’s mummy, who told us all about Diwali and how it is traditionally celebrated in the Hindu religion.  We thank her for giving up her time to share her experience with us all.

In phonics the children have been reviewing the sounds they have learned this term.  They should all now be able to recognise and say the corresponding sound for the following letters: s; a; t; p; i; n; m; d; g; o; c; k; ck; e; u; r; h; b; f; and l. They should also be able to ready the ‘tricky words’ ‘I’, ‘is’ and ‘the’.
