As daffodils start to appear around the school grounds and the days start to get a little longer, it is amazing to think that we are now half way through the school year. I hope that all the children have a restful week away from school and we look forward to seeing them all back feeling refreshed and ready for the second half the year.
This week, the Nursery children have been immersing themselves in the story of Goldilocks and the three bears.

This week, Year 1 started the week with an exciting toy drama workshop. The children imagined they were a variety of toys and went on an adventure to find ‘the golden key’. In English this week, they have retold the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ using a range of story language. When retelling the story to the class, the children ensured they used lots of prosody. During maths, Year 1 have revised their knowledge of number bonds to 10 (addition and subtraction facts) and used this knowledge to help them write addition and subtraction facts for number bonds to 20. They have also found the difference between two numbers and used resources to help them find doubles. In science, the children looked around the classroom to investigate the properties of the materials they could find. Year 1 then used this information to help them sort their own toys into groups based on the properties, for example, hard and soft, rough and smooth. During the lesson, the children found out that some toys can be hard and soft!
This week, in English and Thematic Year 2 have been learning more about the Great Fire of London, why and how it spread. The children published their diary entries written about the Great fire of London where they had to imagine they were there, thinking about what people may have seen, heard and felt at the time. In Maths, Year 2have been continuing to learn about fractions, finding 1/2 and a 1/4 of a shape and an amount. As it was safer Internet Day this week, in computing the children learnt all about Internet safety and voice assistants. The children discussed how AI can be helpful to and understood that they are not real people so the children thought of appropriate commands they could ask a voice assistant to help with.
Year 3 have had a busy week. In maths the children have been developing their understanding of the relationship between the 4 and 8-times tables. In English, the children have been working on their own versions of the story of Cinderella and in their whole class reading the children have been studying The Proudest Blue by Ibtihaj Muhammad and S.K. Ali. The children also had a trip out to Sanderstead library where they were able to join the library and borrow a book. The library have been in touch to say how well behaved the children were so we are very proud of them all. Many thanks to all those parents who helped with the visit.
In Year 4, the children have been working on multiplication using the expanded column method and moving on to short multiplication. In English, the children have had a week of poetry focus. They have studied the poem ‘Ruby Red Rings’ by Joseph Coelho and written their own versions of cat poems. The children used lots of alliteration and thought very carefully about their word choices. In Science, the children have continued their sound topic by making musical instruments and experimenting with string telephones.
This week, Year 5 have been publishing their letters to King Charles. They have been writing to him voicing their concerns about deforestation in the rainforests and urging him to take action. In maths, the children have been multiplying 3 and 4 digit numbers by 1 and 2 digit numbers and in their reading they have looked at Mother Holle which is one of the Brother Grimms’ lesser known fairy tales. They have also been completing end of unit quizzes to secure their knowledge of the Vikings.
Year 6 started the week with a trip to Riddlesdown to watch the students perform their version of ‘The Addams Family’. A very impressive performance. In maths, the children have studied ratio and proportion and learnt about Roman Numerals and in English the children have published their stories based on ‘The Red Pyramid’. As part of their science topic the children have been researching different animals and thinking about how they are adapted to their habitats.
Sports News
Last Wednesday, the sun was shining for our first netball matches of the year as we welcomed Hayes Primary school to Atwood.
In the first match, we started well from the first whistle and we scored quickly after the first centre pass. However, Hayes came back as strong and the game became very competitive. Despite many positive sets of play, Hayes pulled away and won the game 10-4. Player of the match was Freya.
In the second match, there were lots of positive points and the girls worked really hard together. Player of the match was Evie for her excellent work in mid court and also a special mention to Cece and Avni in defence.
This week, the weather was not as kind on Tuesday and gave us rain to play in. However, it did not stop the girls. Our first match finished with a score of 8-1 and the second was 6-1. Two fantastic wins for two fantastic teams! Player of matches were Freya and Jess. There were more standout performances in defence to mention from Cece, Annabel and Salihah.
Well done to all those who played: Amelie, Mary, Mia, Freya, Salihah, Grace, Annabel, Megan, Evie, Avni, Iona, Harlowe, Jessica and Cece, Zimi and Penny.
Bee Netball Festival
On Thursday, a group of netballers took part in a Bee Netball festival at Shirley High school which involved playing a series of short matches against different Croydon primary schools. The whole group were fantastic in their effort and best of all, their positive attitude. The smiles even continued throughout a very long rainstorm! Congratulations to Keira, Arianna, Emma, Cheska, Mollie, Heidi, Izzy and Leila.
Gold Award
Well done to all the children who were selected for a Gold Award today. This half term, we celebrated those children who are always doing the right thing and demonstrate excellent behaviour along with those children who have been making positive steps towards improving their learning behaviour.
Farewell for now.
Today we say goodbye to Mrs Frost as she goes off on maternity leave. We wish her all the best as she heads off for a well-earned rest before baby arrives. We look forward to seeing her back soon and are excited to meet the new arrival as soon as Mrs Frost is ready.
