ATW Reception News – Rainbow fish, Poetry day and composition of the numbers 3 and 4

In Reception this week, we have been reading ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister. The children have loved this story and have enjoyed retelling it using various props. The story encouraged discussions about sea creatures and their habitats.  The children have had lots of fun creating underwater paintings and beautiful rainbow fish.  The children have also used their problem-solving skills to rescue sea animals from ice. The children knew that heat and warmth would free them, so they used their warm hands and warm water to set them free!  The main moral of the story was about the kind action of sharing.  The children have demonstrated this wonderfully, especially when a group of children took turns using the basketball.
In mathematics, the children have been learning about the different ways to make the numbers 3 and 4.  They enjoyed making compositions of 4 by printing with paint and the blocks.  They are confident in telling staff that 4 is made from 3 and 1, and also it is made from four ones.
On Thursday, it was National Poetry day.  The children have been exposed to different types of poems throughout the week.  They enjoyed adding actions to some of the poems to act them out.
The children have been working so hard and now know 8 of their phonics sounds. They have started orally blending and reading some words, ready for reading practice to begin next week!
Yellow class went to Forest School for the first time.  They learned about the rules for staying safe in the area and demonstrated this knowledge beautifully while climbing the trees.  Engaging in physical challenges within their own limits is fantastic for developing executive function skills.  It was wonderful watching the children independently testing their climbing abilities.  There were so many happy and proud faces. Next week, Red class will have their first session.
