ATW Newsletter 19th September 2025

We are now well and truly back in to the swing of things at school and the children have been immersing themselves in the new learning in their year groups.

In Reception and Nursery, the children are in full time and have been settling in brilliantly.  It has been lovely to see them around the school as they start their Atwood journey.

In Nursery, the children have been thinking about what makes a good friend.  You can read more here: https://www.pegasusacademytrust.org/news/eyfs/atw-nursery-news-19th-september

In Reception, the children have been familiarising themselves with the setting and learning their first phonic sounds.  You can read more on the website here: https://www.pegasusacademytrust.org/news/eyfs/atw-reception-news-receptions-first-weeks

This week, Year 1 have been reading the book ‘Red Rockets and Rainbow Jelly’.  The children wrote sentences about things they like, such as sharks, pizza and cats! They made sure that their sentences had a capital letter, finger spaces and full stops. In maths, the children have been learning about different ways to represent amounts using numbers, counters and marks. In geography, they thought about what parts of the world are human features that have been built by people and which are physical features and in art the children began to draw self-portraits looking at the proportions of their face.

This week, Year 2 been learning about past tense verbs and sequential language in English.  In Thematic the children have been etching and printing a Tudor shield design in the style of Andy Warhol with some fantastic results. They have also been learning more about the life of Henry VIII.

This week, Year Three have been retelling and writing their own versions of ‘Into the Forest’ in the first person using expanded noun phrases to add effect.  The children are all really proud of their writing this week! They have enjoyed reading the adventurous story ‘The boy who grew dragons’ and discussing what they would get up to if they had a pet dragon themselves.  Year 3 will also be tasting DRAGON FRUIT next week! The children have also been learning about living a healthy lifestyle and eating a balanced diet to fuel their bodies in Science. In Jade class the children have been working on their collaborative skills in their early morning work.  They have been attempting challenges that require them to share ideas and listen to each other. This week the children had to work together to solve a blank puzzle. It was a lot trickier than they thought it would be! They had to manipulate the pieces in different ways to recreate the rectangle of card. It involved lots of discussion and resilience. Working together and persevering, the green team eventually finished first. Well done to them!

Year 4 have had a busy week.  In English, the children have been studying the story of Romulus and Remus in preparation for their writing.  In maths the children have been thinking about the value of numbers and partitioning tens, hundreds and thousands.  In their thematic work the children have been looking at Italy and Rome and identifying human and physical features and in dance the children have been put through their paces learning a new routine.  We can’t wait to see the finished piece.

In Year 5, in English the children have continued to read ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’, focusing on using relative clauses and dialogue in their writing.  They have also have been learning about the features of a Viking longboat and why these helped the Vikings to be so successful.  In PE, they have started to work on creating a dance based on the Vikings, thinking about how they could use movement to represent building a boat and sailing across the sea.  They have continued to work on place value in maths, comparing and ordering numbers to 1,000,000 and understanding negative numbers.  Finally, in PSHE, they have been thinking about healthy habits and what we can do to ensure we eat healthily.

This week, Year 6 have produced some excellent writing when editing and publishing their diary entry from the animated clip ‘Ruin’.  In science, the children have been identifying and classifying animals by their characteristics and in their thematic unit on Ancient Egypt the children have been completing Egyptian themed self-portraits.

The New Library

We are all very excited for the opening of the new library next week. Over the summer, the refurbishments have been completed and the books have been restocked and it all looks fabulous.  Next week, after our grand opening with the author Susannah Lloyd, the children will have the chance to get back into the library to start enjoying the new space and borrowing books.  Susannah Lloyd is the award-winning author of ‘Who ate Steve?’ which the children voted for as a favourite last year.  As part of her visit, she will be conducting workshops and speaking to the children in assembly.  We are so grateful for the support of FOAP and all the funding they have provided for the library and for our author visit.   It is great to see the money generated through their tireless work hosting fairs, fireworks and everything else being put to good use for something the children will benefit from for years to come.

Jeans for Genes

Thank you to everyone who supported our Jeans for Genes fundraising today.  The children looked great in such an array of denim and we managed to raise over £360 for the valuable work of this charity.

Packed Lunches

For those of you who make packed lunches for your children, we know that it can be a chore to think of things to keep it interesting and healthy while at the same time selecting things that the children actually want to eat.  The NHS has some good tips and advice through the link here: https://www.nhs.uk/healthier-families/recipes/healthier-lunchboxes/

Please be reminded that the children must not bring sweets, chocolate or fizzy drinks to school.  Also, children must not bring any nut products in to school as we have a number of children at risk of severe allergic reactions.

Many children like to bring in a snack for breaktimes.  In key stage one and the early years children are provided with fruit as part of the Fruit for Schools scheme.  In key stage two, children may bring a healthy snack, such as a piece of fruit, to keep them going until lunchtime.  Again, this should be healthy rather than biscuits or sweet treats.

As a final note on food, if your child has a sore throat that needs treating with soothers or cough sweets, please ensure your child gives them to the teacher who will look after them and give them to the child as required.  No child should be carrying sweets or cough sweets on to the playground or self-medicating with them.
