Over the last two weeks, we have been reading the traditional story of The Three Little Pigs. The children have loved reading this story and bringing the language alive. In our literacy focussed sessions, we have acted out the story using actions, puppets, masks and a mini stage. The children have also used pictures to sequence the story and retell it in their own words. We have been busy working collaboratively to make our own little pig scene for museum day! We also had a mini experiment. In this experiment, we tested the strength of different materials. Using a hairdryer, sticks, straw/hay and bricks we watched what happened to the different materials when there is a big ‘gust of wind’. The children made predictions about which material they thought would be the strongest and when the experiment was finished, they were encouraged to pick one of the materials to use to build their own house. The bricks were a clear winner!
Last week in maths, we looked at problem solving. The children were encouraged to work out real life problems with numbers to 5 (and some to 10!) . This week, we have been looking at more and fewer. The children were encouraged to use this vocabulary to make comparisons about groups of toys. They were then encouraged to use mathematical reasoning by explaining how they know. It was great to hear them saying things like “5 is bigger than 1 so this is more” . They have also enjoyed playing the game ‘Mucky monsters’ which asks them who has more, most, less or fewer. This game can be played at home if you search ‘ICT games – mucky monsters’.
Our sounds of the week have been g and o. They were both tricky to find initial sound items but our sound basket was overflowing with “o-orange” things today!
Next week we will begin the story Goldilocks and the three bears and in maths we will begin looking at sizes and how we can describe them.
