Cypress – Showing pride in our achievements

It has been a very sunny week at Cypress and the children and staff have all been making the most of the outdoors during this weather.

We began the week at the Lower School, with a very interesting assembly from Miss Chapman and Seve. This week was ‘International Guide Dog Day’ so we used this opportunity to find all about the amazing jobs that therapy pets do.  Miss Chapman told the children all about the training that Seve had to go through to be a therapy dog.  We learnt that, as well as helping the children at Cypress, Seve also visits the hospital to help patients.  Miss Chapman then talked to the children about guide dogs and the important role they have in helping people who cannot see.  We really enjoyed learning about the amazing things that our animal companions can do to help us.

We have also been focusing on our Pegasus Values and showing care and pride in the way we move around the school and treat others.

This week at the Upper School, we have been reflecting on the importance of manners during a special assembly led by Ms Wayman on Monday. The assembly focused on how showing simple, everyday manners can positively impact the way others respond to us and help create a kinder, happier school environment. Through a story, we saw how how small acts of politeness can make a big difference. We were reminded that good manners cost nothing but are incredibly valuable, forming a key part of our Pegasus Values and helping us all to contribute to a respectful and caring school community.

Holly Class Assembly

What a fantastic way to start the day! This morning, Holly Class took us on a brilliant, whistle-stop rhyming journey through everything they’ve learned this year – and what a journey it’s been! From exploring their local area and visiting Crystal Palace Park to delving into the lives of Victorians and stepping back even further into the Stone Age, it’s safe to say they’ve covered some serious ground. They also treated us to a whirlwind tour of their English texts: The Boy Who Grew Dragons, Fantastic Mr Fox, Agent Zaiba Investigates, Young, Gifted and Black, as well as their work on rocks and soils. All of this was wrapped up in an energetic performance, full of charm and confidence, with plenty of sparkle.

To top it all off, Holly Class sang the Cypress School Song with gusto. At the end of the assembly the whole school had joined in, creating a lovely moment of togetherness. Huge thanks to all the parents and carers who came along to support, and a big shoutout to Miss Fernandes, Ms Francis, and Miss Nicholson for supporting the children to deliver their assembly today – but of course the biggest thanks goes to Holly Class themselves – you were brilliant. Well done!

Swimming in Year 4

Hawthorn Class will begin their swimming lessons on Tuesday. Please ensure your child brings a swimming hat, goggles, appropriate swimwear (trunks or a swimsuit), and a towel. If you are able to accompany the class, kindly inform the class teacher as soon as possible. Should you become available at short notice and would like to attend, please let the school office know in the morning.

Cypress Superstars

Well done to Arthur in Ruby Class who is a member of the Eco-Council at Cypress Lower.  He has taken his role in caring for the environment very seriously and collected three bags of rubbish from Mitcham Common.  Thank you Arthur!  Congratulations to Andre and Rory in Violet Class who came to share their amazing writing.  They had worked really hard to develop their writing and produced some wonderful sentences.  The vocabulary they used was really impressive.  Well done to Ottilie D and Ottilie Q in Orange Class who came to share their fairy tale books they had written independently.  We are proud of you!  Finally A huge well done to Makari in Orange Class who has been working with Miss Cheeseman on his phonics and produced some very good work.  Keep it up Makari!

We’ve had a truly brilliant week celebrating the achievements of some of our shining stars here at Cypress!

First up, a huge well done to Frankie in Willow who has been working tremendously hard on his reading. He read aloud with wonderful prosody and growing automaticity – it was a real joy to listen to him bring Feeling Frankie to life. Keep it up, Frankie – you’re well on your way to becoming a reading maestro! Meanwhile, over in Rowan, Florrie has been proving that perseverance pays off – she took on the TCS Mini London Marathon for the second year running! What extraordinary stamina and spirit, Florrie. It was lovely to have you visit my office and show me your medals! Last but by no means least, a round of applause for Axel, also in Rowan, who wowed us with his brilliantly imaginative and laugh-out-loud explanation of how bees make honey. Think bees with rockets and vacuum cleaners! He then followed it up with a scientifically accurate version packed with technical vocabulary and clever sentence starters. A superb blend of creativity and precision – top work, Axel. We’re absolutely ‘buzzing’ with pride!
