Atwood Newsletter 10th October 2025

It has been lovely to see so many parents visiting the school this week for the opportunity to meet the teacher and hear all about how the childrenhave been getting on.  You can find out more about their learning by reading on.

In Nursery the children have been thinking about sounds and silence.  They have also been learning about the number three. You can read more here: https://www.pegasusacademytrust.org/news/atw-nursery-news-october-10th

In Reception, this week the children have been thinking about autumn and comparing numbers. You can read more here:

This week, Year 1 have been thinking of different adjectives to describe the hats they made for the bear from the story ‘I Want my Hat Back’. The children wrote sentences describing the hat, using the conjunction ‘and’ to extend them. In maths, the children have started learning addition and have been partitioning numbers using counters and part-whole models. In science they thought about what parts of their body they used for different activities. To help them the children tried a lot of activities on the field, including kicking and bouncing footballs, playing musical instruments and using skipping ropes. In geography the children learnt about the four countries that make up the UK and the names of their capital cities.

This week in Year 2 the children had their Diwali workshop where they learnt all about the story of Rama and Sita. The children have begun making their diya lamps out of clay. In Thematic, the children have been continuing their DT project where they taste tested fruit for their healthy muffins. In English, children have been learning about the Bear and the Piano and writing in the past tense using past tense verbs.

This week, Year 3 the children have been taking on the role as scientists and paleontologists by publishing their non-chronological reports on the Tyrannosaurus, where they embedded subordinating conjunctions and possessive apostrophes while remaining scientific and factual. They have enjoyed honing their sketching skills this week completing their sketch of The Crystal Palace, acting as architects with precision of angles while adding shading to show a light source. In maths, they have been challenging themselves learning a new method of addition and bridging 10 by exchanging. During their science lessons they have been identifying the key parts of different animals’ skeletons and the different types of skeletal structure. We are super impressed by the home learning that has been brought into school!

This week, Year 4 have been working scientifically and have investigated the temperature of different areas and objects by using and reading a thermometer.  The children have learned how the Roman army was organised and the roles of different soldiers.  In their reading sessions, the children have started to look at ‘Henry’s Freedom Box’, which is based on a true story and relates to Black History Month.

In Year 5, the children have been using devices to build suspense in the writing for ‘Alma’.  In PE the children have been perfecting their Viking dance and in Art the children have been using their sketching skills to show light and shade when sketching a Viking helmet.  In maths the children have continued to refine their methods for subtracting numbers when exchanging.  The children from Teal class also visited the Gurdwara on Monday.

This week, Year 6 have been planning persuasive speeches in role as Emmeline Pankhurst, aiming to inspire people to join the Suffragette movement and support women’s right to vote. The children have been exploring the key features of persuasive writing, focusing on the use of modal verbs, emotive language, and persuasive devices to create powerful and convincing arguments. In maths, the children have been deepening their understanding of fractions by simplifying, finding equivalent fractions and comparing them. In addition, they have been further developing the skill of converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and applying their knowledge to solve a range of fraction problems.

Sports News

On Thursday, the boys’ football team played a double header fixture against Greenvale Primary School.  Although the boys unfortunately lost both matches, they gave a really good account of themselves and we can start to see people growing in confidence and coming together as a team.  Well done to Henry and Asher who both managed to score a goal against strong opposition.

A Farewell

It is with much sadness that we say goodbye to Mrs Lan today who is leaving for a change of career.  She will be taking up an administrative role at Riddlesdown so many of the children will still see her in years to come.  She has been a much-valued member of staff helping many of our current pupils settle in to school and start their journey at Atwood and we are very sorry to see her go.  We have successfully recruited for this role and we are pleased that Miss Daniel will be joining us after half term.
