In Year 3, we have been studying the book ‘Jemmy Button’ by Jennifer Uman and Valerio Vidali. Based on a true-story, the text follows the character of Jemmy Button, a native boy from Tierra del Fuego, who was brought to England in the mid-1800s to be “educated and civilized.” The book illustrates Jemmy’s adventures in England, his extraordinary encounters, his homesickness and experiences as an outsider in a strange land, and his return home.
The children have written some beautiful poetry describing the great ocean that Jemmy travelled across. We hope you enjoy these examples.
