It has been a week of mystery, giggles, and some very strange ingredients! As part of the “Watch out – There’s a monster about!” topic, the children have been diving into the wonderful world of Billy and the Beast by Nadia Shireen.
The story was read together as a class, but the ending was kept a secret! The children turned into little detectives, using the illustrations and the Beast’s behavior to make predictions about what might happen next.
There were some fantastic (and very brave) ideas about how Billy might outsmart the Beast and save her forest friends from his cooking pot.
In the story, the Beast tries to make a “terrible soup” using forest creatures. Luckily, the Reception chefs had a much better idea! The children created Silly Soups filled with things they love, from lego to Ms Docherty!
The children then worked as budding authors to write their own recipes. They practiced using phonics to sound out ingredients and used their excellent letter formation to write the things they had chosen down.
The children have been very busy sharpening their skills in core learning this week:
-
Maths: Observation skills were put to the test while comparing quantities. The children noticed different attributes and identified similarities and differences when looking at various amounts.
-
Phonics: Knowledge of Phase 3 sounds and tricky words was consolidated this week. The children used what they learned to read longer words, such as lemon, carpet, and rooftop.
In PE, the children showed off great strength and control while continuing their gymnastics learning. The focus was on mastering two specific types of shapes:
-
Point Balances: Balancing on small body parts like hands and feet.
-
Patch Balances: Balancing on “patches” or larger parts of the body, such as the back, tummy, or bottom.
The focus and stillness displayed in the hall were incredible!
