Many thanks to all the parents who came in to school this week for parent evening consultations. These meetings represent an essential opportunity to find out about your child’s academic progress.

This week, Year 1 began counting numbers between 20 and 50. They grouped equipment into groups of tens and ones and were able to identify how many there were by counting in tens and ones. They also used number lines to find one more than a given number up to 50. In English, Year 1 began looking at a new book called Chalk. They found a bag of chalks in the playground, just like the children in the story, and drew their own creations. They wrote the opening to their own stories using a range of adjectives to make the sentences more exciting. In science they began thinking about what materials would be best to make a boat out of for their upcoming DT project. They chose materials and made predictions about why it would be suitable to make a boat.
This week, Year 2 have been thoroughly engaged in their learning. They have been finding out about different London landmarks by researching their historical importance. In Maths, the children gained confidence in adding two 2-digit numbers together and the concept of bridging helped them with this. In their thematic learning, Year 2 continued exploring The Great Fire of London and this week focused on exactly what helped to contain the fire and eventually stop it. In PE, they perfected their abilities in Tennis and Volleyball and are well on their way to becoming experts!
This week, Year 3 have been exploring Forest school as an introduction to their learning about the Stone Age. The children had fun making fires and creating tools out of sticks, two things that were a lot more difficult than they had anticipated! The children began learning about the three parts of the Stone Age and how the people survived as hunter gatherers.
The children also created poems inspired by the poet Joshua Siegal who will be visiting Atwood next week. They enjoyed learning his poem ‘I don’t like poetry’ and used it as the basis for their own ‘I don’t like…’ poems. The children chose vegetables and fruit as their theme to create stanzas using the poetic devices he likes to use – similes’, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia and repetition. The children had a lot of fun creating them!
This week, Year 4 have been continuing their learning on fractions. In maths, the children have been putting fractions on a number line and comparing mixed numbers. In English, the children have been writing a variety of persuasive devices to include in their campaigns to save animals from extinction. In thematic, they have been learning what happened after the Romans left Britain and where the next invaders hailed from.
This week, Year 5 have been working hard on their fractions knowledge, learning how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and also working out how to convert fractions that don’t have the same denominator. They have shown such good effort and resilience with some tricky learning! In English, they looked at the poem ‘The Highwayman’. The children have been creating expanded noun phrases to describe the setting and then using these to develop complex sentences. In thematic, they looked at The Gunpowder Plot and created comic strips to show the events that happened and how this was foiled. In RE, they thought about and reflected on the ways that people can be discriminated against for their religion. They had some thoughtful discussions about why RE is such an important subject and how it promotes acceptance and tolerance for others and their beliefs.
Year 6 have had a busy week. They have completed a round of practice SATs to prepare them for the real thing in the summer. The children have shown great perseverance and achieved some great scores. The practice helps the children to know what is coming and reassure them that they are ready. It also helps teachers to identify any areas that children may need a little more work on before the summer. Well done year 6! The children have also found some time in the afternoons to complete some fantastic sketches demonstrating their developing understanding of perspective.
World Book Day
In this national year of reading the children had a great week last week as we celebrated ‘Book Week’. We had a range of activities through the week with teachers change classes to read to the children and opportunities for the children to read with each other. We were also lucky enough to have 2 author visits from Sufiya Ahmed and James Sellick. The highlight of the week was the book character parade and catwalk. Fortunately, the sun shone and everyone was able to get outside to see some fantastic costumes and some cosy outfits. Thank you to all the staff who contributed to making it such a successful week.
Sports News
Cross Country Update
Last Saturday, several children represented Atwood at the SLH Surrey cross country race. A very well done to Emma, Isha, Olly and Ezra from Teal class for battling the mud and inclines of Farthing Downs. We hope to see lots of you at the next event on March 21st.
Netball Updates
On Tuesday of last week, the netball girls arrived at Croydon High – the sun was out and the girls were eager to get going!
And what a display our teams gave us!
Our defence was strong across the court and we made several interceptions. Quite a few times, we watched as the team got the ball to goal in 4 passes! However, the final score in both matches didn’t reflect the effort or indeed the glowing faces at the end! We are so proud of each girl that excelled in that sports hall. There were too many improvements to mention but the extra practice in training is definitely paying off!!
Congratulations to players of the match – Salihah and Zimi – and to the whole squad for stepping up and showing great enthusiasm.
