Yellow Class have had such a fun, hands-on week working as real scientists for Science Week! We turned our classroom into a laboratory and carried out a brand-new experiment every single day, making sure to use our prior knowledge to predict what would happen next. We loved testing our ideas, with one child sharing, “I love making predictions to see if I am correct!”
Throughout the week, we grew gummy bears in water and watched tiny beads absorb liquid to grow into big water balls. We also put eggs in vinegar to watch a chemical reaction and we saw the shell disappear; the egg was slimy and we could see inside it! We also grew our own shiny salt crystals, and explored colour mixing alongside floating and sinking. We even took our learning outside to make giant bubbles grow around us, and we used kitchen science to turn liquid cream into solid butter before enjoying a wonderful outdoor picnic with our creation!
Inspired by our scientific focus icon, Alice Ball—a brilliant chemist who made medicine for people with sore, itchy skin conditions—we mixed up our own reactions to see how treatments are made to help people.
Beyond the lab, we blasted off to learn about the planets and space, discovering that without the force of gravity pulling us down, we would be floating in the air along with everything else in the room! We also planted cress and used our fantastic scientific vocabulary to explain exactly how all of these amazing changes happened. It truly was a week of non-stop discovery, and as one happy scientist said, “This is the best week ever!”
