In Gold Class, we have been reading and learning all about the story ‘Owl Babies’. On Wednesday, Kent Owl Academy visited Beulah to show some of their beautiful birds to Gold Class. The children had been counting down the days and were very excited when the day finally arrived. We were very proud of our children because they were excellent at being quiet — even creeping silently into the hall — as owls don’t like loud noises!
We met Osas, a Southern White-faced Owl, who had two feathers that looked like pointed ears, but we learned that an owl’s ears are actually positioned at different angles on their heads! Bella, an American Kestrel, had beautifully patterned feathers. She made Ms Montoya jump when she tried to fly off her carer’s arm! To the children’s surprise, Lansell, a Tawny Owl, looked just like the mummy owl in the story ‘Owl Babies!’ It was lovely to see the birds up close and to listen to them hooting. When Lansell flew over our heads, the children remained calm and brave. Did you know that owls fly really silently? We couldn’t hear their feathers make a sound.
We also learned that birds don’t chew their food and can take many hours — sometimes even two days — to digest it! Whatever they can’t digest is brought up in a mass of material called a pellet. We had a look at a pellet that Bella expelled the day before — we could even see a mouse’s bones!
It was such a lovely visit. We had a lovely afternoon. Please see some images attached.
