Atwood Newsletter 27th June 2025

We finished the week with a sports day full of fun but there has been a lot going on everywhere else too.

In Nursery, this week it’s been all about sea creatures and our underwater world.

This week, in Reception the children have seen the wonder of butterflies and partridges hatching.

This week Year One have started learning an oral story from Africa, The Awongalema Tree. The children began to learn to tell the story with actions and have been acting out parts. In maths, they have been finding a quarter of different shapes and recognising that all the parts have to be equal to be quarters. In science, the children looked closely at the different flowering plants around the school and drew and labelled their own plants. They also began looking at spreadsheets in computing and how to use them to calculate totals quickly.

In Year Two, the children have been data handling using pictograms in Maths.  In English, the children have been looking at poetry based on the poem Don’t! by Michael Rosen.  They have also used clay to make some fabulous sea creatures and been practising their sewing skills ready to make their puppets.

This week, Year Three have been developing their maths skills and using the expanded column method for addition.  In English, the children have continued reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and in science the children have been learning all about photosynthesis and how plants grow.

Year Four have been studying Onjali Rauf’s ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ in their English lessons.  In maths the children have been recapping all their prior knowledge of 2d shapes and are beginning to look at angles.  In their thematic work the children have completed their Anglo-Saxon jewellery using paint to add detail and a glue mix to add a gloss finish.

This week, Year Five the children have been writing their newspaper report based on High Rise Mystery. In maths the children have been converting grams to kilograms and millimetres to metres and vice versa. In PSHE the children have been reflecting on their personal histories and their likes and dislikes and capturing them on a personal tree.

This week, Year Six have continued rehearsals for their grand end of year performance.  The show is really coming together and the children are excited to perform in front of a live audience next week.

Sports News

It has been a busy week in sports with a number of children competing at Croydon Schools Athletic meet at Croydon Arena.  At the time of writing, we have children representing the school in 13 finals on Friday.  All of the children have been excellent and we will update next week with a full news story.  We wish them all good luck in the finals tonight. Notably, the children all looked fantastic in their brand new sports kits that was paid for by FOAP with funds raised.

It was lovely to see so many parents turn up for Sports Day.  The sun shone and the children had a great time with a full range of activities ranging from a Treasure Hunt Race to a Penalty Shoot Out.  My personal favourite was the animal races as children attempted to race like guinea pigs, fish or sharks.  A special mention to Kelue who, in an outstanding act of sportsmanship, sacrificed what looked like certain victory to help a fellow competitor who had fallen on the track.

Also, a big well done to Hawa, Laiq, Liyana and Zidan’s grandad who competed and completed the parent race aged 75.  Thank you for being such a good sport.

A huge vote of thanks to Mrs Bayliss for all her efforts in organising Sports Day.  Thanks also to Mrs Bayliss for organising the participants for Croydon Sports ably assisted by Mrs Adams and Mrs Hutchinson.

Spelling Bee

On Monday this week, four representatives from Year 3 went to Whitehorse Manor to compete against children from the other Pegasus schools in the first ever Spelling Bee competition.  The children did a great job of representing the school and showcased their excellent spelling skills correctly spelling words like ‘metamorphic’, ‘chronological’ and ‘conjunction’.  You can read more here.

The FOAP Summer Festival

Thank you to everyone who attended the summer festival.  The sun shone and the stalls were bustling with activity.  It was a well-attended event that raised important funds that will go towards the new school library.  Many thanks to all the volunteers and staff who turned out to support on the day.

 And finally…

Please can I request that people do not use the Reception outdoor learning area as a cut through when collecting or dropping.  Children for KS1 and 2 classes should make their way round to their classrooms using the path alongside the field.  This will allow the Reception staff to set up the area for the children to learn without risk of equipment and resources getting moved or damaged.  Thank you for your cooperation.
