ATW – Materials Science Workshop

On Thursday, Year 1 enjoyed an exciting visit from ‘Fizz Pop Science’ who delivered a fantastic hands-on workshop packed with fun investigations.

The session began with the children exploring a range of everyday objects, discussing what they were made from and describing their properties. Year 1 used a variety of scientific vocabulary such as flexible, smooth and opaque which they will continue to develop in their science lessons.  They also talked about how the properties of materials make them suitable for different purposes.

The children were then presented with two mystery powders (baby powder and magic snow) and put on their safety googles to carefully observe and describe the properties. After discussing their observations, they added water and watched in amazement as the materials changed.

To finish the session, the children made their very own slime, once again describing its properties using their scientific language. They were very happy to take their creations home!  It was an engaging and memorable experience that really brought the topic of materials to life.
