ATW Nursery – Sea creatures and problem-solving

Phonics:
Our sound in phonics this week has been ‘qu.’ While playing the game ‘What’s in the box?’, the children could identify the words ‘queen’, ‘quick’ and ‘quack’, all began with the sound. We later moved on to ‘blend from the box’. We looked at blending phonemes to make the words from our initial sound game. The children were asked to find objects around the nursery environment to add to our phonics table, beginning with the initial sound.
Literacy:
This week, our topic has continued with Commotion in the Ocean. Every day we have explored new poems, looked at their illustrations to see if they tell us what our poem might be about and then added actions. Towards the end of the week, we have even started to move like different animals too! Using instruments and discussing what actions to make, we have had dolphins jumping around to the chimes of a xylophone , a shark to the beat of a drum and jellyfish to the jingle of a maraca.
Maths:
Our maths carpet sessions this week have seen us introduce problem-solving. Our first problem was hanging up socks but not having the right number of pegs. What did we need to do? Some suggestions were to take socks away, whilst other children solved our problem by adding more pegs. Once all our socks were up, the children were asked to match the socks according to their patterns. Next, we moved on to matching objects with their other half e.g. a toothbrush with toothpaste and a bucket with a spade. Lastly, at the end of the week, another problem occurred. Many of our sea creatures had cold feet and they needed socks. Our octopus only had 6 socks, our starfish only had 1 and our turtle only had 2. By counting out the amount of tentacles, points and feet, we could correctly add the right amount of socks to keep our animals toes all warm and cosy.

Enhanced provision:

Alongside our sea theme, the children have created many props to aid and contribute to their play. We have had masks and puppet-making stations available for the children to cut and create independently.
Under the sea always provides many opportunities to be creative and for the last two weeks, that’s exactly what we’ve been up to. We started our creations with fish from our previous topic ‘The River’ and have since added jellyfish using strips of tissue paper, a giant octopus created out of paperchains, green-painted turtles with patterned shells, sand-covered starfish and glittery seahorses.
Graduation is nearly here already! We have been learning 3 songs with actions, creating accessories and planning the event, and cannot wait to show you what we’ve been up to.
