ATW Reception News – dinosaurs and slime!

This week in Reception, the children have been diving into the fascinating world of dinosaurs! Using the book Meet the Dinosaurs by Caryl Hart, we learned exciting facts about the diplodocus, tyrannosaurus rex and Spinosaurus. We explored non-fiction books and discussed their features, such as headings, photographs and fact boxes, to help us understand how information texts are written. Inspired by this, the children worked together to create their own class dinosaur fact book with each child proudly writing one page to contribute.

This week, we had a visit from Professor Bubbleworks.  The children were very lucky to get to experience how to make some of their very own slime! They mixed PVA glues with baby oil then chose a colour to enhance their slime.  They then added some borax mixed with water and had to stir it ferociously to make it all mix together.  They had lots of fun playing with their slime creations! Alongside our dinosaur learning, the children have enjoyed a range of hands-on investigations, exploring lots of slimy and interesting textures. These sensory activities encouraged curiosity, discussion and descriptive language.

In phonics, we have been learning the sounds oo, oo, ar and or, and practising reading and using the tricky words was, you and they. It has been a busy, exciting week full of discovery, creativity and learning!
