ATW Reception News – Aeroplanes and our world

This week in Reception, the learning has been based around the book ‘Emma Jane’s aeroplane’ by Katie Haworth.  In the story, the main character travels around the world visiting famous landmarks and picking up creatures along the way.  The children used Google Earth to understand the great distance these locations are from one another.  The children have had a go at creating their own versions of the different landmarks, such as New York’s city skyline and Sydney’s Harbour Bridge.  They have had a lot of fun making aeroplanes in various forms!
In mathematics, the children have been developing their counting skills and using the mathematical vocabulary of ‘equal’ to compare amounts.  In phonics, they have been taught the sounds for the following graphemes: v, w, x, and y.  They have also been taught the tricky words: ‘and’, ‘has’, ‘his’ and ‘her’.  They have been applying their phonics knowledge to spell as part of whole class learning and independently through the learning challenges on offer.
