Cypress Upper News Friday 21st November

It has been another hectic week at the Upper School.   We began Friendship week with the assembly theme, “How can I make a positive difference in our school community?”  A few of our Well-being Ambassadors took part in a role play, demonstrating how you can weigh others down with unkind, ‘heavy’ words or instead buoy them up with ‘light’, caring comments and observations.  Our thoughts were re-affirmed by the words of the song, ‘Build Up’ which reminds us we can build up or tear down with our choice of words and actions towards other people.  The children worked in classes on friendship themes across the week, including work on anti-bullying and finishing this morning with an assembly from all our Well-being Ambassadors about the values that make a good friend and many good ideas about the way we can all exemplify those.

Jamaica Hurricane Appeal

As we reflected on the values of friendship, we also considered one of the ways in which we, as a school, were showing kindness today in raising money and bringing donations for the Jamaica Hurricane appeal.  Thank you to everyone who dressed up and donated today.

Houses of Parliament

Our School Councillors visited the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday and returned to school full of purpose and ideas for change and engagement.  We look forward to seeing how they will influence the school in the coming months and see their projects – keeping the playground in good shape and ensuring a good range of playground equipment is available –  through to completion.

Y3 Afternoon Tea

The Cypress Tea Rooms were open and very busy on Thursday afternoon with a splendid array of sandwiches (with no crusts!) and cakes.  Year 3 created their Victorian Tea and were generous enough to share it with other members of staff.  Having seen a number of lessons over the past week where children were learning to write instructions to make a Victoria Sandwich cake, I was delighted to discover that their recipes worked and was very happy to be able to share the fruits of their labour.  Thank you to parents and children in year 3 for your generosity and hard work in making the tea event such a success. Look out for a news story with more pictures of this delightful event!

PTFA discos

As the term moves on, there are many events to remember.  The school discos are next week: Yr 3 on Monday 24th; Yr 4 on Tuesday 25th and yr 5/6 on Wednesday 26th.  Please make sure you collect promptly at 4.15pm.

Social Media Event

On Thursday 27th November at 5.30pm, we have the first of our events hosted by the school and the PTFA – Social Media and Your Child – a talk by Dr Chanelle Thornton.  There will be the chance to have a drink and a chat with other parents and then a talk where there will be the opportunity to ask questions and share thoughts.  We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there.  Please note that the talk is not designed for children.

I hope you are going to have a lovely weekend with some time to relax with your families.
