ATW Reception News – Black history, Diwali and patterns

It is Black History Month, and the children have been learning about the importance of celebrating it. We have investigated different black people who have done amazing things throughout history, such as Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks. We were insprired by Dr Kings ‘I have a dream…’ speach, and thought about what we could do to make our world a better place.  Sarra said, “I would take all of the rubbish out of the oceans for the fish.” And Rohan told us, “If people didn’t have food, I would make them some food.”
We shared our own cultural histories, with some of the children bringing in items from home to show where their families came from and the cultural practices they follow.  From next week, we will focus on one language spoken by a child in Reception and use each language to say hello while doing the register. This is a great starting point for next half term’s topic, ‘Our Amazing World’.
Next Monday is Diwali.  The children learned about how this Hindu festival is celebrated and listened to the story of Rama and Sita.  They had fun creating their own Diva lamps, which are now drying out, ready to take home for Diwali.
In mathematics, the children have been creating patterns. They discovered that there are different types of pattern rules, such as AB, ABC, AAB and ABB patterns.  They have enjoyed making patterns using different materials and methods.
In phonics, the children have been learning the sounds: h, b, f, and l.  They have started to segment CVC words for spelling.  They are then applying this knowledge to write these simple words.  They have also learned the tricky word, ‘the’.
Yellow class enjoyed going to Forest School this week.  They made autumn crowns using leaves that had fallen from the trees.  The mud kitchen was popular, as was climbing in the trees.  Next Tuesday, Red class will be going to Forest School.
