CYP: Sunshine, Sports and Success

This week has been very hot and sunny making the learning conditions in school challenging.  The children have shown real resilience especially those who have been out on trips this week.

Ruby Class Visit Morden Hall Park

As part of their learning about habitats, Ruby Class visited Morden Hall Park on Tuesday.  The children took part in a range of activities and really extended their science learning.  They enjoyed taking part in pond dipping and minibeast hunting and enjoyed identifying the living things that live in each of these habitats.  Then children were also very happy as the activities took place in the woods and they were nice and cool in the shade of the trees.  We were very impressed with how polite and well behaved the children were.  They represented the school so well.  A huge thank you to the parents and carers who helped on the day.  Your support makes a huge difference.

Year 1 Visit the Horniman Museum

As part of their learning in thematic, Year 1 visited the Horniman museum this week.  During the visit they took part in an African storytelling workshop and got to see some interesting African artefacts.  To support their learning about plants, the children also explored the gardens.  Despite the hot weather, the children had a fantastic time. Thank you to our parents and carers who gave up their time to support with this trip.

Lower School Sports’ Day

Today was Sports’ Day at the Lower School and a fantastic time was had by all.  In the morning our Nursery and Reception children took part in a carousel of activities including a baton relay, sack race and space hopper racing.  The children really showcased their skills and were able to work well as a team.  In the afternoon, it was the turn of Year 1 and 2 who enjoyed taking part in the hurdles, dressing up and egg and spoon race to name a few.  As always, we finished our Sports’ Day with the ever popular parent’s races and tug of war.  Well done to all our children for taking part.  Thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to support and to Miss Hunt and Miss Chapman for your hard work organising this event.

Year 2 and 3 Buddy Reading

As part of their Transition to the Upper Site, Year 2 took part in buddy reading sessions in the Woodland Library.  The Year 3 children really enjoyed reading with the younger pupils and showing them all the books the library has to offer.  Miss Fernandes was very impressed with the behaviour of all the children and how well they worked together.

Year 5 Watch Frozen – The Musical

This afternoon, our Year 5 students had the incredible opportunity to attend the performance of Disney’s Frozen the Musical at Harris Academy South Norwood. It was a magical experience, and the children were absolutely captivated by the stunning costumes, beautiful music, and heart-warming story. Watching the talented students bring Arendelle to life was truly a special moment for all involved. A huge thank you to our wonderful Year 5 staff and parents for accompanying the children and ensuring everyone had an enjoyable and memorable time.

Year 3 Trip to the Wetlands Centre

On Thursday, Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic trip to the London Wetland Centre, exploring its sprawling wildlife haven. The children wandered through scenic walkways, discovering lakes, meadows, and a variety of wildlife, including birds, bats, and water voles. They also had the chance to visit the Explore, Discovery, and Pond Zone adventure areas. A big thank you to Cedar and Holly class teachers, Miss Ahmed and Miss Fernandes and Y3 parents for accompanying the children and ensuring the trip run smoothly. Watch this space for a news story detailing the Y3 fun!

Year 5 Visits the Tower of London

As part of their Crime and Punishment theme, Year 5 enjoyed an unforgettable trip to the Tower of London. They crossed the iconic Tower Bridge, explored the fortress’s dark history, and learned about famous figures like Anne Boleyn and Guy Fawkes. The guided tour included tales of traitors’ gates, torture chambers, and the role of Beefeaters. A highlight was viewing the Crown Jewels and exploring the White Tower’s armour and royal artefacts. The visit truly brought their learning to life and deepened their understanding of British history. Click here to find out more

CYP Fest

Thank to all our children and families who were able to join us for the ‘Cyp Fest’ summer fair last Saturday.  The fair was a huge success with at least £6000 raised to support the school.  We had a number of local businesses make donations or offer their time at the fair.  We even had our own pyramid stage and decorations provided by the children at the Lower School.  Thank you to our amazing PTFA volunteers for all your hard work, both in the run up to the event, and on the day.  We really appreciate all that you do for the Cypress Community.

Cypress Superstars

Well done to Una in Yellow Class who has been producing some lovely writing based on the book ‘Superworm’.  She has written her own book and we are so proud of her. Well done to Faith in Larch Class who got to the girls’ finals in Croydon Sports and ran confidently and represented our persevering spirit at Cypress. Faith – we are very proud of you! We are incredibly proud of Elias in Hawthorn Class for his outstanding achievements this season with Junior Elite FC! Not only did he win two trophies, but he was also named Player of the Season and Top Goal Scorer, having scored over 30 goals – what an incredible feat! His dedication and hard work on the field have truly paid off. Well done, Elias. Ruben and Isobel in Hawthorn Class have been diving deep into Anglo-Saxon history, exploring the fascinating topic of social hierarchy. We had a brilliant chat about absolute monarchy and how it differs from our modern-day system! It was so enjoyable hearing all the things they’d learned and their thoughtful insights. Well done to both of them for engaging so thoughtfully in such an interesting topic! Joanna and Oliver in Holly Class wowed me today with their narratives using speech in their stories inspired by their English text, The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane’ . Accurate use of speech punctuation and ambitious vocabulary use really helped to bring your narratives to life. Keep it up! We have lots of talented swimmers to celebrate next week so look out for more Cypress Supertars next week!

We wish all our children and families a lovely weekend.
