This week, Year 3 had the exciting opportunity to make a Stone Age stew! As part of our Thematic curriculum, Year 3 have been studying about seasonality of vegetables and ingredients Stone Age people would use to prepare and cook food.
Hunter-gatherers had to develop inventive ways to prepare and cook food. While we are lucky enough to have kitchen appliances and tools, Stone Age people would handcraft these for cutting, mixing and blending.
We agreed that most Stone Age food would be rather basic, however we thought otherwise when we attempted and making our own vegetable stew. We added sweet potato, peas, green beans, carrots, courgette and a sprinkle of thyme to our stew. The children definitely enjoyed it as we were left with empty bowls and asking for more! This was much different from our gruel tasting in the Autumn term!
We were very proud of all the children handling the kitchen equipment and tools sensibly and carefully. We hope these cooking skills come in useful and are transferrable to your kitchens at home!
