This week in Reception we used the book, “The Leaf Thief” to help our Reception children learn about autumn. The story follows a little squirrel who discovers that his leaves are disappearing and learns about the natural changes that happen in the season. The children enjoyed joining in with the repeated phrases and discussing the colourful illustrations. We talked about how leaves change colour and fall from the trees, and why animals like squirrels collect food for winter. The story inspired outdoor learning, where the children collected leaves, noticed different colours, and created leaf art. It was a fun and engaging way to explore autumn’s changes.
In Maths, we learned all about the number 5. The children explored what 5 looks like, how it can be made, and where we can find it in everyday life. We used counting songs, games, and practical activities to help the children recognise and understand the number. They counted out five objects, showed 5 on their fingers, and explored different ways to make 5 using cubes and counters. We also looked for groups of five in our environment, such as five leaves or five pencils. The children enjoyed using their number skills through play and hands-on learning experiences.
