ATW Reception News – Partridges, caterpillars and frogs

What a nature-filled week it has been in Reception! Our resident tadpoles have all started to develop into froglets. The children have been delighted to watch their transformation from frogspawn to the tiny froglets that are currently jumping around in our make-shift ‘pond’ before being released back into the pond in which they were laid.

This week’s learning has been based on the story of ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and the lifecycle of a butterfly. The caterpillars we received a few weeks ago did a fantastic job of pupating this week so we could watch the next step in their metamorphosis. The children have been estimating what type of butterflies might emerge from the chrysalis’ and are waiting patiently to see the next stage in their development.

And finally, in our learning all about lifecycles, a batch of 19 eggs arrived on Monday. As we ‘did not know’ what was in the eggs, we researched what animals are born from eggs and then estimated what animals we thought were inside them. The children have been very good at creating signs to tell people not to touch the eggs as they need to stay safe and warm while they hatch. On Thursday, the first egg hatched, and out popped a partridge! On Friday morning, five little birds were running around, with more on the way. Our thanks go to the FOAP who paid for this amazing experience for the children.
