What a week we have had in Reception! We started the week with a trip to Godstone Farm. The Farmers from Godstone guided us through four workshops: pond dipping, bug hunting, animal interactions, and pig feeding. The children were fantastic at pond dipping and caught lots of fish. During the bug-hunting session, the children found not one but two stag beetles! Red class met a tortoise and snake during their animal handling session and Yellow class met a bunny and duckling. The children agreed that the bunny was cute and the tortoise was cool! Luckily, one of the pigs had given birth two days before we visited so we met ten baby piglets. We fed two of the adult pigs and learned how they use their eyes instead of their nose to find the food. We finished the day with a run around on the playground before heading back to school on the coach. Thank you to all the adult volunteers who gave up their time to help make the trip happen.
Reception loved the visit from Zoo Lab. We met Boots the millipede, Blossom the snake, Mary the tarantula, Fredrick the cockroach and Sheldon the snail! Mr. Zoolab put the children’s minibeast knowledge to the test. They blew him away with their excellent fact-remembering. They knew arachnids have 8 legs and insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts. They weren’t fooled by the snake either as many commented “She’s not a mini beast she has bones!”. What a fantastic morning!
