ATW Reception News – Bonfire night, Remembrance Sunday and comparing numbers

This week in Reception, the children did a great job settling back from the half term holiday. On Wednesday, it was Bonfire Night so the children learned about Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot.  The Makaton signs for ‘fireworks’ and ‘fire’ were taught.  Everybody had fun making their own firework pictures using a variety of different materials.

At the end of the week, we learned about Remembrance Sunday. We discussed how it would make us feel if we had to go to war and how brave the people who fought for us were. We thought about how thankful we are to live in our peaceful country and what we can do to spread love and kindness.

In mathematics, the children were comparing numbers using the vocabulary of ‘more, and ‘fewer’.  They enjoyed making predictions of who would have more when comparing amounts.

In music, the children have started to learn one or two of the Christmas songs they will be singing for the Reception Christmas Carol Concert on Friday 12th December.

In phonics the children have been reviewing the sounds they have learned this term.  They should all now be able to recognise and say the corresponding sound for the following letters: s; a; t; p; i; n; m; d; g; o; c; k; ck; e; u; r; h; b; f; and l. They should also be able to read the ‘tricky words’ ‘I’, ‘is’ and ‘the’.  The children have been reading simple CVC words all of the last half term.  In the last couple of weeks they have started to use their phonic knowledge to segment the sounds in simple words for spelling.

Yellow class went to Forest School this week.  The fairies and elves had given us a special book to read that had lots of different creatures in it.  The children then searched around the Forest School area to find the hidden creatures.
