ATW Nursery – There’s a hole! and numerals to 5

Phonics:
Our initial sound in phonics this week has been ‘l’. While playing the game ‘What’s in the box?’, the children could identify the words lolly, lips, lemon and leaf, which all began with the initial sound. We later moved on to ‘blend from the box’. We looked at blending phonemes to make the words: leaf, log, lid, lock. The children were asked to find objects around the nursery environment to add to our phonics table beginning with the same initial sound.

Literacy:
The new story we introduced this week is called ‘The Big Red Bus’ by Judy Hindley, where we realise the vehicles are stuck in a hole. Earlier in the week, we discussed our new keywords and what they might mean. The children have been using these words in further discussions about our story, using key vocabulary such as ‘problem’, ‘materials’, ‘tip’ and ‘roll’. The story led us to investigate our own problem and hole within the upper school playground. The children acknowledged there was a problem and shared their thoughts on how to fix it.
“It’s a real big hole” – L.Mc
“We have to get dirt in it, and some concrete and when it dries it will fix.” – A.S
“Dig” – A.F
“We can roll it” – M.M
“We can dig it” – Z.U
“Mud and concrete” – B.F
“All different types of materials” – A.B
Our problem-solving continued inside when we replicated a hole within Nursery and tried different materials to see if our hole could be filled. The first material was feathers, but we collectively agreed they were “too soft” and fell to the bottom of the hole. Next were some bricks, but again, as a group, we agreed they were “too bumpy and not flat.” Next were balls, but these would roll away, and lastly, we tried sand. Success, the hole was filled! The children explained that it can be “patted, spread and rolled out.”

Maths:
Our maths sessions this week have seen us write the numerals 1-5. Using whiteboards, the children have been observing how to hold their pens with their fingers and thumb at the tip of the pen. Each day has been a different numeral and the group have been attempting to write and use the numerals in everyday play scenarios.

Enhanced provision:
Across the week we have been planting! Inside our miniature garden (tyre) and our garden trough, we have planted wildflowers donated by a member of staff which they received during the King’s coronation. The children have been taking it in turns every day to water and care for our flowers.
VE Day was on Thursday and the children contributed to making a Union Jack Flag to say thank you for the services that have helped to keep our country safe.

Child’s voice:
‘This week I have enjoyed’…
“Rolling the hula hoops so they don’t touch you” – J.W (outdoor provision)
