ATW Nursery – The River and Sequencing

Phonics:
Our initial sound in Phonics this week has been ‘w’. Whilst playing the game ‘What’s in the box?’, the children could identify the words; Wig, Web and Wave all began with the initial sound. We later moved on to ‘blend from the box’. We looked at blending phonemes to make the words; Web, and Wig. The children were asked to find objects around the nursery environment to add to our phonics table beginning with the initial sound.

Literacy:
This week, our new story was introduced. We are reading ‘The River’ by Hanako Clulow. To begin this new topic, a tuff tray with various images of bodies of water was displayed to explore and investigate. We could use these in our carpet session to talk about the pictures they saw and describe the differences between them. Whilst reading our story, the children could apply their knowledge of water and explain the main character ‘fish’ is on a journey along a river. This linked closely with our nursery rhyme of the week ‘1,2,3,4,5 Once I caught a fish alive’. Towards the end of the week, we have been looking at the first two pages in detail and can recognise the journey starts high up in the snowy mountains with icy waters.

Maths:
Our maths carpet sessions this week have introduced the keyword ‘sequencing’. To help the children understand a sequence we spoke about 3 different times throughout the day and what order they go in. We discussed and shared what we do in the mornings to get ready for nursery, what we do throughout the day and what we do when we go to bed. The children shared “My daddy wakes me up, then I brush my teeth, and I have breakfast”, whilst another shared “I go home, I have dinner and I go to bed”. The children were encouraged to use keywords “First, then, last” when explaining their routine. We performed actions too when introducing a new sequence for our friends to join in with such as “First we jump, then we clap and lastly we roll”.

Enhanced provision:

Alongside our river theme and the journey of the fish, the children have created their own fish using water sprays and tissue paper to imprint the colours onto templates to make them bright and colourful.
Growing plants. Finally, this week, we have seen our plants thriving in the sunshine and water provided by the class and the British weather. I wonder what flowers will bloom next?
Providing opportunities to support handwriting, the children have been writing the letters in their name every day in preparation for Reception. They have all been trying their very best and even though it’s only been one week, there have been significant improvements already!!
Our reading corner has had another make-over and this time, we have new beanbags and a rug to create a cosy space for our children to relax and read in.

Child’s voice:
‘This week I have enjoyed’…
