ATW Nursery – Subitising, boats and sunshine

Phonics:
Our initial sound in Phonics this week has been ‘j’. Whilst playing the game ‘What’s in the box?’, the children could identify the words; jellyfish, jug and jam all began with the initial sound. We later moved on to ‘blend from the box’. We looked at blending phonemes to make the words: jug, jet and jam. The children were asked to find objects around the nursery environment to add to our phonics table beginning with the same initial sound.

Literacy:
Our week continued with the story ‘The Big Red Bus’ by Judy Hindley, where we come to realise the vehicles are stuck in a hole. To enrich the children’s love for reading, we created actions for our story and what the vehicles may look and sound like. The children performed the story with arms out wide as if they were driving a bus or tipping to the side as if they were a tipper truck. By the end of the week, some children were confident enough to retell the entire story!

Maths:
Our maths carpet sessions this week have seen us subitise. Quickly showing fingers, the children were required to shout out how many they could see. Finding it easy, the children found it a little tricky when two hands were involved! We moved onto subitising with passengers on a printed-out bus. The children could see the dice formation of a number and paired it with the correct number of passengers.

Enhanced provision:
The sunshine has continued for another week at Atwood, and to help the children cool off, they attended a spa! A nursery-friendly spa, with bubbly water to dip their toes in. The children loved this experience and have said they can’t wait for the spa to visit again!
Forest school this week has seen us creating boats to link to our theme of transport. Using materials around us and found within the forest school, our boat was made from sticks and a leaf for a mast. Together, we tested the boats in a bucket of water to see if they could float or sink. The children were happy to see they floated! One child wanted to test items that sink and therefore was asked to go and find something they believe would sink. Items included big sticks, bark clippings, leaves and bricks. The children agreed their items felt light and would therefore float, however, the brick was heavy and sank straight away.
Over the last 2 weeks, the nursery has been maintaining the responsibility of looking after and caring for our plants. Taking it in turns, the children have been watering the plants and have been waiting patiently to see any signs of growth. Finally, this week, seedlings have appeared, and our plants are thriving in the sunshine and water provided by the class.

Child’s voice:
‘This week I have enjoyed’…
