Phonics:
Our initial sound in Phonics this week has been ‘V’. While playing the game ‘What’s in the box?’, the children could identify the words Volcano, Van and Vet, which all began with the initial sound. We later moved on to ‘blend from the box’. We looked at blending phonemes to make the words; Van and Vet. The children were asked to find objects around the nursery environment to add to our phonics table, beginning with the same initial sound.
Literacy:
For the last week of transport, we read the book ‘The Train Ride’ by June Crebbin. The children started to join in with the repeated refrain ‘What can I see?’, holding their hands to their eyes as if they were looking. The class spoke about our experiences of going on a train and where we’ve been. This included:
“To Santa” – A.D
“To my nannys house” – B.F
“I go on a train to London to see Big Ben” – O.S
“I had my lunch on the train” R.G
This led us to create actions for the story, performing it to the class throughout the week. We could use the story to inspire our work too, creating paint stamped trains, ordering number carriages, observing the marks a train makes in paint and creating a train role play with an Atwood train station and tickets in our outdoor area.
Enhanced provision:
Nursery went on a journey!
Following our story of the week, the class went on a journey around the school, visiting many stops along the way. Once back, as a collective, a map was drawn to remember the journey and revisit the next day. Looking back at photographs which were taken, the class were encouraged to use descriptive words to explain and describe where they went.
Science week
Our nursery class have turned into mini-scientists this week, conducting and observing many different science experiments. They included; observing bread and apples to notice any changes in appearance (of which we are patiently waiting to see!), egg in vinegar (the egg shell broke away, grew in size and turned squishy like a ball), mentos and coke (the coke bubbled up and exploded) and finally, how oil and water separate. Everyone has loved joining in with the experiments, predicting what might happen and seeing if they came true. Here are some predictions:
Bread & Apple:
“The apple will rot” – J.W
“The toast will go black” – K.P
Egg:
“It will go” – L.Mc
“It’s going to stay just like that” A.S
“All of the eggshell might crack off” – A.B
“Chick” – M.B
“It break” – A.C
Coke:
“It’s going to explode!” – J.W
“Its going to bubble” – S.A
Oil:
“It will sink” – I.K
Child’s voice:
‘This week I have enjoyed’…
“Just playing in the home corner with my friends” – E.D
