ATW. Nursery News – Owl Visit!

This week in Nursery, we had some very special visitors!

In follow up from reading the story ‘owl babies’ last term, we had a visit from the Kent owl academy. We met 3 owls; Harvest – the dark breasted barn owl, Severus – the vermiculated eagle owl and Percy – the tawny owl, as well as their handler Charlie. Charlie told us lots of interesting facts about each owl. We learnt that they have fantastic hearing and sight but not a very good sense of smell. We also learnt that they eat mice (and other animals) whole and regurgitate bits that cannot be digested into a pellet. We even got to break up some pellets to have a closer look.. we found bones, fur and a tail!!!! The children also looked at and listened to the difference between owl and eagle feathers.  They were amazed at how silently an owl can fly. At the end of the session, Percy flew around the room and over the children’s heads. So exciting!

This week, we have also been talking about fire works night. Lots of the children came to the Atwood firework display and were very excited to tell the adults all about the colours, sounds and waffles! In topic this week, we have been singing ‘If you’re happy and you know it’ and talking about emotions. Each morning, the children have self registered by saying how they feel which prompted further discussions about emotions. In maths, we have been recapping all the numbers we learnt last half term.
