We have continued reading the book ‘Owl Babies’ in Nursery this week, this time with a focus on families. We began the week learning the names of all the characters in the Owls’ family. Then, with some photos from home, the children were invited to speak about who is in their family. We encouraged the children to use the full sentence ‘In my family..’. The children enjoyed learning about their friends’ families and some of them had a go at drawing their own families. They are really familiar with the story now and join in when Bill says ‘I want my Mummy’. The story has also taught us that our grown ups always come back, which has helped with transition and settling in!
On the creative table, we have had lots of opportunities for the children to practice their fine motor skills. We have explored using paint, googly eyes, cotton wool, felt, tissue paper, cutting and very sticky glue to make some beautiful Owl pictures! The classroom is filling up with their beautiful artwork. It is safe to say they are gaining confidence in using different materials when being creative.
Our number of the week is 2. We sang ‘2 birds in a tree’ and ‘put a 2 in the air’. The children explored our outside area, looking for things they could find 2 of. We have been focussing on the amount rather than the numeral, which we move onto after half term. Some children even found 2 in their family portraits; 2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 hands, 2 feet. On Thursday, we used all the conkers collected from our walks last week to have a conker rolling competition. The children aimed for the 2 target in the middle and then (with some adult help) added up their total scores!
