ATW Nursery News – 23rd October

This week in Nursery, we have been looking at celebrations. We started the week celebrating Diwali. We spoke about similarities and differences between other celebrations (and with Halloween and bonfire night approaching, the children often referred to these!). Some of the similarities that the children noted were; sharing sweets, lighting candles, having fireworks and inviting friends and family over.

To celebrate Diwali the children made their own Diya lamps. First, we mixed our ingredients together to make the salt dough. Next, we rolled and pinched our dough into our desired shapes. When the salt dough had dried, we painted and decorated our lamps. Finally, we made our candles to go inside – we twisted cotton wool and dipped it into ghee (purified butter). This is a traditional Indian way of making Diya candles.

In Maths, we have been looking at the number 5. The children collected 5 items from around the room. We have had a big focus on making sure each item has 1 number (1 to 1 correspondence), stopping on the correct number and saying the total amount.
