Readers are Leaders at WHJUN

Whitehorse Manor Junior school celebrated world book week with an abundance of activities and workshops to inspire our next generation of leaders! We kick started the week with a WHJUN book giveaway – giving every child the opportunity to choose a book of their choice (see previous post).

On Tuesday, Year 5 spent the afternoon doodling with Liz Pichon – the author and illustrator of Tom Gates! This was an online workshop that enabled Y5 to explore art with a love of reading and helped their creative juices to flow.

Wednesday was the day WHJUN dived into poetry with author and rap poet Karl Nova. He shared his incredible stories about his childhood, upbringing and his path to poetry. He led a whole school assembly and children were hooked with his unique poetry style. Year 6 were in awe when Karl led workshops on how to write riddles in the form of haikus!

Year 4 visited Waterstones on Thursday and exchanged their World Book Day tokens for a book of their choice! They were spoilt for choice with the range of exciting titles that were available to them. During a WBD assembly, we introduced our dedicated librarians to the school and they will lead developments for the WHJUN library so watch this space!

To end an exciting and inspiring week, we organised reading for pleasure where parents were invited to WHJUN to read with children and show their love for reading too. All children took part in reading for pleasure and it was a lovely atmosphere with children exploring new titles they had received from earlier in the the week e.g. from Waterstones visit or WHJUN book giveaway OR reading their favourite book to each other.
