Didn’t we have a lovely time at our Year 3 Victorian tea party!

This week in Asteroids and Meteors class we had a splendid time at our Victorian tea party. We have been learning about the Victorians and how the ladies took part in this social event, that took place in the afternoon when they drank tea with a variety of sweet foods. It was a time when people had a snack around 4–5 p.m., to bridge the gap between lunch and a later supper. There would be a lot of polite conversation, music, card games and sometimes outdoor activities like croquet took place. There was always a hostess, who was very important in ensuring the tea was brewed perfectly and served to all guests, often in a matching china set.  At our Victorian tea party, Ms DeDuca, Mr Strutt, Ms Cormack and Ms Richards were all great hosts.

We tasted Victorian sponges, Battenberg cake and jam tarts and thought about the taste, appearance and texture before giving them marks out of ten. We learnt that the Battenberg cake was created for the 1884 wedding of Princess Victoria and Prince Louis of Battenberg (from Germany). Some believe the four squares of the cake represented the four Battenberg brothers.

It was a great way to learn about the Victorian times and a chance to show our impeccable manners and make polite conversation!
