CYP: News Update 16th October

This week has been Black History and Diversity Week across the Trust.  At Cypress, our assemblies have focused on the theme for Black History Month this year which is ‘Honouring our Local Communities’.  This theme aims to recognise both well-known figures and everyday people whose dedication has helped shape society and inspire future generations.  In assembly we explored the impact of Dr Paul Stephenson, a British civil rights leader who led the Bristol Bus Boycott of 1963.  We also learnt about the Reverend Canon Eve Pitts who was ordained as a vicar in 1994.  She has campaigned against discrimination and launched several fundraising campaigns.  In addition to this, we learnt about Lubaina Himid a British artist and professor and Ade Adepitan a former paralympian.  We have been exploring these people further in class.

Cypress Storytellers

As part of Black History and Diversity work, we have had three special end of day stories via Google Meet involving all our classes at Cypress.  We have been treated to a range of exciting stories by our guest storytellers Ms Wadham-Powell, Ms Stewart, Ms Francis and Mr Nicoll.  What a lovely way to end the school day!

“We are World Record Holders!”  Year 5’s Big Reading News

To celebrate the National Year of Reading, Year 5 took part in the National Literacy Trust’s official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt!  The class joined a live event with famous author Frank Cottrell-Boyce  and joined thousands of readers around the globe to “Take 10 to Read” for wellbeing and fun.  The best part?  Because every reader counted towards the official tally, every pupil in Year 5 is now a World Record holder!  It’s a brilliant fun fact for them to tell family and friends, and a great reminder of how powerful (and exciting!) 10 minutes of reading every day can be.

Maths Addition and Subtraction Workshop

Thank you to all our parents and carers who were able to join us on Wednesday morning for our addition and subtraction workshop held at Cypress Lower.  It was wonderful to see so many of you attending and keen to support your children with maths.  Thank you to Ms Stewart and Miss Hunt for organising and running such an engaging session.  To see resources and information shared in the workshop, please click here.  We will organise a multiplication and division parent workshop in the New Year.

Lime Class Harvest Assembly

We began the day at the Upper School today with a wonderful Harvest Assembly from Lime Class. Lime Class took us on an exciting journey around to see how Harvest is celebrated.  We also learnt about the origins of Harvest and hoe people around the country still hold Harvest festivals and suppers to mark this.  Well done to Lime Class for a wonderful assembly that showed such confidence and co-operation.  A huge thank you to all our parents and carers who were able to attend and to Ms Stewart and Ms Dodd for your hard work putting the assembly together.  Please continue to send any Harvest donations into the school offices before next Wednesday 21st October.

KS1 Diwali Workshop

Year 1 and 2 thoroughly enjoyed their Diwali workshop earlier this week, learning more about the festival of light.  To find out more about what they got up to click here!  Thank you to our PTFA for funding this exciting and memorable learning experience for our children.

Seve at Cypress Upper

This week Seve the Cypress Super Dog had a fantastic morning at Cypress Upper.  Lots of the children enjoyed reading stories to him and grooming him.  Seve was so relaxed it look like he fell asleep.

Congratulations to the following children, who were elected by their classmates for the KS1 Eco Council!  Well done to everyone who bravely shared their manifestos in class.  We look forward to their first meeting with Miss King and Mrs Dutton where they can discuss their ideas for making Cypress a greener school.

Cypress Superstars

Well done to Aariyah in Holly Class who came to share her book about ‘Little Leaders’.  Ms Binks really enjoyed you reading to her about Rosa Parks.  Congratulations to Maysa in Sycamore Class who came to share her brilliant independent maths work.  It is great to see how much your confidence is growing.

We are very impressed with Jack in Turquoise Class who is a maths whizz!  He’s been able to quickly mentally calculate and recall his number bonds to 100!  Shah in Indigo Class has produced some wonderful homework about his family, his likes and dislikes and has drawn a wonderful flag of Kurdistan.  Josie in Indigo Class wrote a wonderful manifesto for our Eco Council elections this week, complete with a beautifully decorated envelope.  Lily, Milica, Axl, George, Maddie and Ruby from Violet Class proudly showed off their extended writing pieces and read their favourite sentences to Mrs Sorensen.  Haroon has created a wonderful book all about Haroon!  He’s included photos of his favourite activities and family.  Ruben in Indigo Class has shared an impressive family tree that he created at home with his sister.  Freddie and Nella in Yellow Class have created wonderful pieces of art, decorating the first letter of their names.  We are very impressed how carefully they were able to write their own names too!

We wish all our children a relaxing weekend and look forward to welcoming you all back to school on Monday.
