CYP Lower – Raring to go with Reading Practice!

We’ve had a great week at Cypress Lower School.  Children in Reception have been reading ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson this week and have enjoyed re-telling the story.  Year 1 have been learning about toys from the past, making their own cup and ball toy and writing instructions using ‘bossy’ verbs.  Our children in Year 2 have been busy writing fantastic retells of Little Red Riding Hood and in their topic work they have been carefully designing and making attractive packaging for their own biscuits.

This week we have started our new Reading Practice groups in Year 1 and 2.  Children will be reading 3 times a week with a trained adult to develop decoding skills, fluency and comprehension reading the same book.  This book, which is matched to your child’s phonic knowledge, is then available as a Big Cat Collins eBook for you to read at home with your child.  Over time you will build a library of all the books they’ve read in school.  Please click here for the letter with more information.  Reception children have already been having Reading Practice sessions and also have access to eBooks online.  Remember to look at the ‘Before Reading’ page on the inside cover so you can help your child practice the key words and phonic sounds from the book.  Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you have any difficulties accessing your eBook.  Happy reading!

Our Wednesday enrichment PPA sessions resumed this week – please click here for the timetable.  The following classes have Forest School this half term: Orange, Red and Blue.

We sent home our Spring term curriculum newsletters today, containing lots of information about what your child will be learning this term.  Upcoming diary dates can be found here.  Please click these links to read them online and ask your child’s class teacher if you have any questions.

On Monday Ms Chapman lead a very informative assembly about the importance of listening and children in KS1 thought about what makes a good listener in the classroom.  Remember… you can hear somebody talking but you need to listen to them to understand what they are saying.  Well done to children who received a Rainbow certificate this week and to Amani and Tom for winning a Word of the Week rosette.  Next week our Word of the Week is kindness.

We hope everyone has a fantastic weekend and look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.
