Even though the first week back has only been four days, we’ve managed to pack in a lot. On Wednesday, we had a spectacular firework display. Today, Year 2 have gone to Hampton Court and Magenta Class treated us to a lovely assembly where we learnt all about the Suffragettes. Nursery even had a visit from some owls! Read on to find out what else has been going on.
In Nursery, the children met some owls, talked about emotions and learnt about fireworks.

This week, Year 1 started reading a new book in English, Whatever Next? by Jill Murphy. At the start of the week Year One explored props from the story and made predictions about what the story was about. At the end of the week, they wrote two sentences about what Baby Bear took to the moon and used the conjunction ‘and’ to join these sentences. In maths the children have been using number lines to add two different numbers by counting on. They also explored different ways of making ten by working systematically using counters and ten frames. In science, the children learned about Louis Braille and how he created the braille system of reading. In history, they thought about how they have changed since they were a baby and how they would change as they grew older.
Year 2 have been reading Roald Dahl’s The Twits as an inspiration for their writing this week. They have been using lots of adjectives to describe how disgusting Mr. Twit’s beard is. They have also been thinking about subtraction and looking at the inverse of number bonds to ten. In their thematic work they have been thinking about the sort of foods that Tudors ate. Then, they finished off the week with a trip to Hampton Court.
This week in Year 3 the children have been reading the book ‘Where the poppies now grow’ in Whole Class Reading, exploring the origin of Remembrance Sunday. We had an afternoon High Tea with the Duchess of Bedford, where we enjoyed some Victoria Sponge and small sandwiches. The children learnt about how an afternoon tea came to be. They began learning how to complete subtraction equations using partitioning in maths. In thematic, the children have been exploring the lives of children in the Victorian era.
This week, Year 4 have been reading Race to the Frozen North which recounts to the true story of Matthew Henson. They have also been reading about the life of Walter Tull as part of their learning about Remembrance Sunday. In maths, the children have been using the compact method to add 4-digit numbers and in their Thematic work they have been learning about what Romans would have worn and designing their Roman shields.
In Year 5, in English the children have started reading the story of Beowulf. They have mapped the story for future writing. In maths, the children have been data handling looking at bar and line graphs and interpreting them. In PE, the children have been doing gymnastics. The children have been reading ‘The Armistice Runner’ which tells the story of a young fell runner who discoveries and is inspired by the running journals of a Great Uncle who went off to fight in World War One.
This week, Year 6 have been learning about the fascinating process of mummification! Using technical vocabulary — and including some of the gory details — they have been building up to writing their own detailed set of instructions on how to mummify a body. In maths, the children have been multiplying fractions by fractions and tackling some challenging word problems, applying their reasoning skills to real-life contexts. During whole-class reading, in line with Remembrance Day, the class have been exploring the powerful book War Games. Through thoughtful discussion, they have delved into the key themes of friendship, courage, and the impact of war.
FOAP Fireworks
Many thanks to all the volunteers and the FOAP committee for putting together such a fantastic firework display on Wednesday night. The weather stayed dry and the fireworks were spectacular. This event is a huge fundraiser for the school and everyone who attended is contributing to important resources for the children. This time around the event raised over £6000 but none of it could happen without all the willing volunteers who give up their time to make things run safely and smoothly. Thank you.
Sports News
On Thursday, the boys’ football team played a home game against Forestdale School. It was a very hard-fought match against a very good team. After Ronnie’s freekick put Atwood ahead Forestdale equalised making it 1-1 at half time. Atwood were somewhat fortunate to be holding on for a draw with Forestdale hitting the post three times and Seb making some excellent saves when, with very little time on the clock, Atwood counter attacked and Asher scored to make it 2-1. Well done to all the team!
