Atwood Newsletter 20th June 2025

This week, the sun came out and temperatures soared but through it all, the children were still focused on their learning.

In Nursery the children have been learning all about animals that live in the oceans.

In Year One in their English lessons, this week the children found out many more facts about lions.  Did you know lions live together in a pride?  During maths, they completed their money learning by making money amounts.  The  children also now understand that a half is 1 of 2 equal parts and  can find half of an object or shape.  In DT lessons, children found out that almost everything we eat comes from plants or animals and must be caught, farmed or grown. They  also looked at photos of food and sorted them into groups depending on whether they were grown in the UK or Africa.  During science, the children started their learning about plants and discovered many facts about Beatrix Potter.

In Year Two, this week the children have been writing their adventure story based on ‘The Secret of Black Rock’ where they have chosen their own legend.  In Maths they have been exploring 3D shapes identifying their properties.  Year 3  have also been practising their sewing ready for when they make their hand puppets.  In science the children discussed how animals are dependent on different habitats focusing on an Oak tree.

This week, Year Three have been publishing their stories based on Leon and the place between.  The children have come up with some wonderful ideas of how their characters can slip through portals in to magical words.  The children have also been reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by American author Kate DiCamillo, illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline.  In maths the children have been measuring length using metres and centimetres.

Year Four have had a busy week.  They have been publishing their fairy tales tat they have been working on.  In maths the children have been identifying and categorizing quadrilaterals by looking at their properties.  In Science the children have been learning about the different teeth that humans have and in their thematic work the children have been looking at the impact that Anglo-Saxons had on Britain.

This week, Year Five started the week with a trip to The Tower of LondonAlso, they have continued the English work on High Rise Mystery.  In maths, the children have been thinking about coordinates and translating and reflecting shapes and in their Thematic work they have been finishing off some stunning Aboriginal artwork.

This week, Year Six have been focusing on prop production with endless bits of cardboard being transformed into staging and special effects for the upcoming year 6 show.  Alongside that, the children have also managed to fit in some English work based on the Greek myth of Odysseus.

Poetry Competition

This week, on Wednesday, selected children from all year groups set off for Whitehorse in the mini bus to take part in the Pegasus Poetry competition.  This year’s theme was Summer Poems.  The children had written their own poems and performed them beautifully.  There were various prizes for all contestants with some outstanding poems showing a real flair.  You can read more here:

 The FOAP Summer Festival

Thank you to everyone at FOAP and all the volunteers who will be helping at the Summer Festival tomorrow.  This event takes a huge amount of organisation and raises vital funds for the school.  Please come along and support if you can.

 And finally…

One of our Reception children, Roxy, has been growing her hair and is going to cut it off and donate it to The Little Princess Trust in aid of Alopecia UK in support of her friend and ex- pupil Jessica.  If you would like to support her efforts, you can do so through the following link.  Well done Roxy!  What a caring thing to do.
