Atwood Newsletter 14th November 2025

This week, in amongst all of our lessons, we managed to find the time to stop and reflect with a two minutes silence on Tuesday. This important moment of reflection has linked to various books and additional learning that has been going on in school.

In Nursery, this week the children have had a visit from the dentist and also been to Forest School.

In Reception, the children have been thinking about Remembrance Sunday and reading The Naughty Bus.

This week in English, Year 1 had a letter from Baby Bear who stars in the story ‘Whatever Next!  He asked the children to visit the Moon with him and they all kindly agreed.  Before they went, the children needed to write him a letter to state what items they would take with them and give a reason for their choices.  To join their sentences, the children used ‘because’ or ‘so’.  In maths this week, Year 1 have solved a variety of addition word problems and used number bonds to find a part.  During science, the children investigated their sense of touch by feeling different materials and describing how they felt.  On Friday, Year 1 visited the Moon and looked for Moon gems.  They also made jam sandwiches for their picnic on the Moon.  Just like Baby Bear in the story!  It was such an enjoyable day and they all had lots of fun!  Year 1 had their reading cafe on Tuesday and would like to say a great big thank you to all the parents/carers who came into read with groups of children.

Year 2 have been busy writing instructions this week.  Based on Roald Dahl’s The Twits, the children have been explaining how to make their own wriggly spaghetti recipes.  In maths, the children have been learning to subtract 2-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers and in their Thematic work the children have been comparing the lives of Tudor children and children today.  Did you know that Tudor boys had to wear dresses until they were 8 years old?

It has a been a busy time for Year 3 recently. Just before the half term break the children had a fantastic visit from a man who helped us develop the children’s STEAM skills. Building a structure using garden canes and elastic bands, they created their very own Crystal Palace. It was a bit tricky but the children persevered and created an enormous structure that was fun to walk through. The children have also learned about the origins of an Afternoon High Tea and enjoyed cake and tea as Queen Victoria would have done back in the 1800s. Then at the beginning of this week, Year 3 ventured up to the Victoria and Albert Museum to learn a bit more about the Crystal Palace and how the money raised from the Great Exhibition helped to build the museum. They had fun building and dressing up and looking at exhibits from the Victorian era.

This week, Year 4 have been painting their Roman shields based on their own designs. In English, they have learnt what a subordinate clause is and have been creating sentences using them in preparation for their letter in role as Matthew Henson while learning about his journey in the book ‘Race to the Frozen North’. In maths, they have been learning how to use the compact column method to support them with addition problems.

In Year 5, the children have been planning their setting descriptions in English.  They are based on the story of Beowulf and have been describing Grendel emerging from his lair. In maths, the children have been plotting and drawing their own line graphs and interpreting each other’s data.  In their reading lessons, the children have studied’ In Flanders Field’.  In science, the children have begun investigating push and pull forces.

In English, Year 6 have been practising their use of parentheses — including brackets and dashes — to enhance their writing. Linking to their thematic learning on Ancient Egypt, the children have been preparing to write instructions on how to mummify a body. They have now moved on to planning their final set of instructions, focusing on key features such as adverbials of time and manner, as well as the effective use of imperative verbs.  In maths, the children have begun learning about decimals. They have been exploring decimal place value, ordering and comparing decimals and applying this knowledge to solve a range of challenging questions.  In whole-class reading, Year 6 have begun a new text: Once by Morris Gleitzman — a striking and emotional novel set during the early days of the Second World War. The text feels particularly poignant following our recent Remembrance Day reflections. The children have been inferring and making predictions about the main character, Felix, as they follow his journey and consider his experiences during such a dangerous and uncertain time.  In Cyan class the children have been replicating Andy Warhol’s artwork as part of their enrichment programme and they treated us to a fantastic class assembly where we learnt so much about the suffragettes and the struggle for women to get the vote.

Book Fair

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible visiting our travelling book fair next week.  The books will be on show in the library after school.  As well as being a great opportunity to pick up some early Christmas presents this is also a valuable source of funding for new books for our school.

A polite reminder.

Please can I request that all parents check their child’s clothing and make sure that it has a name in it.  We have an ever-growing mountain of lost property and we cannot return unnamed items.  Also, please ensure your child comes to school with a coat even if you bring them by car.  Unless the weather is really bad, we try to get the children outside to play.  Thank you.

And finally…

Over the past few weeks, around the school, the children have been busy planting bulbs.  We hope that in the spring we get a lovely show of daffodils.
