Atwood Newsletter 13th June 2025

The week has been jam-packed with visits and visitors.  Children have been to the farm and to London and we’ve had snakes, spiders cockroaches and even cavemen come to see us in school.

This week, in Reception the children had a trip out to Godstone Farm and a visit from some special minibeasts.  Read more here: https://www.pegasusacademytrust.org/news/eyfs/atw-reception-news-godstone-farm-and-zoolab-in-one-week

In Year One this week, the children have completed their Phonics Screening Check.  The children have all worked incredibly hard and we are very proud of all of them.  They have also been writing super sentences for their lion fact files containing lots of interesting and amazing information.  In maths, the children have been learning to identify notes and coins and in science the children have been sorting  animals into herbivores, omnivores and carnivores.

In Year Two, this week the children have been developing their ideas for their story based on ‘The Secret of Black Rock’. In DT this week, the children explored what sculptures are and have explored different sculpting techniques using playdough. The children are really excited about making their own sea creature sculptures using clay in the next few weeks. In Geography, they worked in groups to create their own map labelling the north and the south pole.  The children also used a key to show what the climate is like in the continents surrounding it.

This week, Year Three started the week with a Buddhist workshop as part of their RE studies.  You can read more here: https://www.pegasusacademytrust.org/news/atw-year-3-buddhist-workshop .The children finished the week with a fully immersive stone age experience learning all about how people would have lived during this period of history.  They learnt how to make fire, knap flint and use stone tools to cut and carve. The children looked great in their outfits but more importantly, they learnt lots of fascinating facts.

Year Four started the week with a trip to The Natural History Museum as part of their learning about volcanoes.  The children watched a volcanoes and earthquake show where they learned that seismometers are used to measure the intensity of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.  They looked at the patterns of the seismic waves on a computer programme and the children had to decide whether or not people in the town needed to evacuate.  The children also learned about different types of volcanic eruptions and learned why earthquakes happen.  The children also had time for a quick look around Hintze Hall, where they saw the 25 metre blue whale skeleton and briefly visited the dinosaur gallery.  Back in school the children have been learning about the 24 hour clock and comparing it to digital times.  They have also been using clay to make Anglo-Saxon jewellery.

This week, Year Five have continued their newspaper reports based on High Rise Mystery.  They have been learning how to use the active and passive voice in their sentences.  In maths the children have been learning about symmetry and reflecting regular and irregular shapes.  They have also been practising their high jump technique and Lavender class have been investigating Australian Aboriginal art.

This week, Year Six have been busy rehearsing their lines and learning their songs for their upcoming production.  Things are coming along nicely so make sure you keep the dates clear.  There are two performances on the 1st and 2nd of July.   The children have also been finishing off their forest survival guides.  In maths the children have been working on designing a theme park working within a given budget and thinking about how they can make a profit.
